ThiS is tJl~ir prodUct. and as long as there are ignorant sloths around. to buy their product,_ they will flourish. I have always regarded. CNN as The New York Times of newscasting·until recently, when I saw a. segment on helmet laws in · America. These were not stretched truths they ·. were claiming as statistics: they were lies. First of all, the American public should have caught on when they com- pared California, without a helmet law, to Georgia, with a helmet law. Why go t~ opposite comers of America when they could have com~ California to Neva- da right next door? Nevada has a helmet law to make comparisons to. All of the other variables would be more likely to remain constant, such as riding season, road conditions, weather and riding styles, because they are much closer. This wou1.d be important in any responsi- ble comparison. Even so, their claims were false. CNN claimed that the rid« in Califor- nia was four times more likely to die in a motorcycle accident in Calif<mia than in Georgia. According to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, Geprgia had 2,058 accidents, r~sulting in 60 fatalities or 2.92 deaths per 100 accidents. California had 20,899 accidents, resulting in 620 fa- talities or 2.97 deaths per 100 accidents so CNN's claim simply bears no resem- blance to reality. Further, CNN claimed that Wyoming had something like a 178 pereentincrease . in fatalities when· tbey removed their hele met Jaw. Wyoming oDly had nine motor'- cycle- accident fatalities last year. Any high schoOl Student kOOWS that when you deal with very small numpers and in- . crease tllem by whole numbers, the per- centages go up rapidly. That is why re- sponsible surveys must ~urvey large gi'oups of people to get credible results. What is impc.>rtant is to look at the big picture, not an insignificant segment, in order to get honest statistics. If they did, CNN would see that across America, whether your state has a helmet law or not, the average deaths per 100 accidents· are incredibly close. · I am not here to argue helmet laws, though, this is just what I know.){}' point i$, when we see a segment oo gun control, crime, capital punishment, abor- tions, drug u.se or whatever, we should have a right to some de~ of honesty and not have to worry if some special in- terest group or insurance lobby has paid for or influenced. a station into broa&:ast- ing their propaganda.
