Disillusioned with Civic DearBditoc Since January 1986 I have been active in protecting • green space in He.ctseha: Part. I. also, believe that oommunication and compromise are the only methods of problem solving- and that w. why I joined the ad- v.isu'y committee. a committee gathered in bqJes of re~ solving problems plaguing the Hecbcher Musewn. Initially I bad my coocems about the integrity of the said committee; but the individuals I worked with proved to be conscientious. diligent and open-minded We all worked long how:s to teaeh a resolution that I feel wzw arrived at with an equal share of compromise and creativity. Although l still wish that. the museum ex- pansion could take place somewhere other than Heckscber PMk. I am convinced fairness was served. RAMAGE Huntington An open letter to the community: , I would like to inform you about the problem we have with pollution. Pollution is one of the big problems in the world. It spoils the environment greatly. Some people think it wiD change by recycling~ But yousre wroog. Some of the po•ution will change, but some won't. One of the things that will not change is tbe ozone layer:. It protects us from the sun's mys. Let me inform you_ that we are making it disappear. We're wearing itoot, yoo see. If you're using spray cans in your bOOse -like hair spray .. shaVing cream, Pam - the gas that pushes those things out wears away the ozone layer. If you notice, the winter year after year grows shorter and shorter. That might be one of the side effects of the ozone layer wearing away. The months that are sup- posed to be cold. like January and February, might be- come warm like summer. . In tbe last couple of summeiS it's been extnmely hot. All I am trying to tell yoo, the Long Island communi- ty. is just be wise about the spray materials you use. I don't want to scare you that something horrible .is going to happen'to our world. Something horrible won't happen if we act now and fast. Recycle more! Reuse more! If you care to recycle ~just do what the community say to do. - AVALUCKS Plan For Non-Recyclables Dear Editor: 9yearsold East Northport 'Fhe town fatheiS have wisely instituted recycling pro- grams throughout Long Island. We should give an in- centive to recycle to industry and COllSUIDelS. This coold be accomplished by having consumers pay fOI'_ the safe disposal of their non-,recyclable trash. . Collection cans could be standardized, bar coded and weighed On non-recyclable collection dafSs the garbage would be weighed so that the coosumer cooJd be billed on some regular basis. . This plan makes sense from the standpoint of human behavior, and it would improve the environment Why should people who live frugally pay for the trash of those wbo want the luxury and convenience of a ''throw- away society\?
