mURSDAY, JULY 31, 1975 LONG ISLAND TRAVELER-WATCHMAN PAGE SEVENTEEN T h e y A r e N o t A n E n d a n g e r e d S p e c i e s Accompanied by owner Mrs. Betty Holly of Port Jefferson Station, Sam is about to add his pawprint to the contract for services at the clinic. Cats and dogs are not among the endangered species. Their skyrock eting birthrate grows more tragic cach year. H u n d reds of thousands of kittens and puppies are born to die, and they do not alw a y s die easily . H u m a n e a u t h o r i t i e s hav e b e e n seeking a solution to the cruelty; all agree there is no easy solution. Destruction has been virtually the only answer and must continue to be for too many as long as we allow the unwanted to be conceived and born. At th e K e n t A n im a l S h e l t e r , River Road, Calverton, the accent is on prevention rather than destruc tion. D u r i n g its six y e a r s of existence, every female animal ac cepted by Kent has been spayed and every male neutered, all at the expense of the shelter. Thus no Kent cat or dog has added to the trem e n d o u s surplus of puppies and k i t t e n s . W h e n 85% to 95% of animals brought to pounds must be destroyed, every litter is surplus. K e n t h a s c a r r i e d its h u m a n e approach to the problem a step further by the establishment of the H a t h a w a y W . Scully Spay and Neuter Clinic, where such surgery is performed at nominal fees so that it is within the financial reach of most pet owners. The modern hospital, opened in September, 1973, has already been enlarged to accommodate the de mand for its services. In its first months, 987 operations were per formed, during 1974 2,758, and in less th a n six m o n t h s th i s year 2,011. With a second veterinarian added to the staff, it is anticipated that approximately 4,000 operations will be performed annually. There has been one principal complaint against the clinic—the telephone is so busy that it is difficult to reach the clinic to make an appointment, a clear indication that enough pet owners do care. No services other than spaying and neutering are offered at the clinic. A num b e r of Suffolk veterinar ians have been generous with their time and advice in the establish ment of the Scully Clinic, and the Board of the shelter wishes publicly to express its gratitude to them. While Mrs. Leila Ennis, left, of Mastic waits for Black- ie’s admittance, son Edward gives his pet words of en- couragennent. Below, Princess assures Shad, pet of Ms. Re gina Brandt of Levittown, that there is nothing to worry about. t . 5th ANNUAL 4 Outdoor Antic[ues Flea Market ^ American Legion Grounds Main Road, Southold ^ Saturday, August 9th A Donation $1.00 lOjh I Wi.h Thk Ad: JQ.00 ^ 5.QQ p ▲ Sponsored by ^ American Legion Auxiliary G.T.G. As many as 20 pets and people come to the clinic each day, and a like number of owners arrive to call for their pets who underwent surgery the previous day. During the afternoon, those operated on two weeks earlier are brought to the clinic for surgery check. Right, it is all over for vociferous Tabitha, on her happy way home after surgery, with Mr. and Mrs. Michael DiMeglio of Smithtown. Mrs. Charles 8. Scully, president of Kent, and Mrs. Gretchen Scanlan, director, on right tjelow, meet frequently to develop programs for the busy adoption home and for the clinic tiearing Mrs. Scully’s name. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ t j U a t G / i n i t y b o u t i q u e A t f i c f i u / a / t t g ’g Dresses - Sportswear - Lingerie 130 Main St. Westhampton Beach 2 8 8 - 1 1 3 9 I ROBERT L.
