rAGE TEN T H E WATCHMAN THURSDAY, JULY 13, 1939 Object to Idea Potatoes Are Fattening Food A recent dispatch from Colland- •er, Ont., printed in many news papers, was to the effect that the Dionne quints had been put on a -diet, reducing starches and sugars, and that while it is not strict, it banned potatoes completely. It added that the two nurses had to give up potatoes also. The im pression given was that potatoes were fattening. This has caused widespread comment and criticism among potato growers and dealers. The old fallacy that potatoes are fat tening has long since be^n dis proved. Some of the foremost medical authorities of the United States have announced that po tatoes are not fattening, but on the contrary are one of the very finest foods available for both children and adults. It is said that a number of potato growers and dealers in New Brunswick have objected strenuously to this reported “ban on potatoes.” They object to the damage which such an announce ment would cause the potato in dustry due to world-wide pub licity attendant upon all state ments concerning the quintuplets. It is understood that Sturges Dorrance, merchandising and ad vertising counsel for the State of Maine, will submit to Dr. Dafoe many of the publications by em inent medical authorities, who claim there is no truth to the idea that potatoes are fattening.
