PAGE TWO T H E WATCHMAN Chamber of Commerce Fosters Campaign to Beautify Village (Continued from Page 1) tongues of M attituckians for some tim e past, was discussed at some length. The result was that a committee w as appointed to ap peal to the Southold Town H igh way D e p a rtm e n t to supply the signs for this purpose. From time to tim e complaints have been made about the n a r row n ess of the railroad crossing ju s t w e st of M a ttituck on Sound avenue. Recently a letter was w ritten to L. I. R. R. ofTicials who responded iramediately by send ing a m a n to M a ttituck who look ed over the situation and agreed w ith the com p laintants in that r e pairs to the grade crossing w e re essential for the safety of traffic. He said that the necessary repairs w o u ld be attended to as soon as possible. Gold Basketballs for Team Gold basketballs w ill be pres ented to the champion M attituck High School basketball team at a dinner, at which Big Ed Danowski w ill speak, on Thursday, the 27 th, at 7 o’clock. The dinner w ill be held at the M attituck Firehouse and all mem b ers of the Cham b er of Commerce are not only invited but urged to attend this dinner. It is your chance to show our high school team that their efforts on the hardwood floor have not gone unrecognized by the tow n s people. It is hoped that a large turnout will be present. While on the subject of sports, Sidney Tuthill, representing Rob ert Lindsay, urge.d that M attituck residents support the tow n ’s base ball team by their presence at the games and the m e rchants by dis playing in prom inent places the posters heralding the coming games. While the m a n agership of the team is no sinecure. Bob L ind say nas agreed to take th a t posi tion again, and it is the duty of both players and spectators to give him all the support possible. The question of the disposal of debris in the rear of the shops on Love lane and other streets was again introduced. An editorial pertaining to this m a tter, which appeared in a recent issue of the W atchman, was read by Lewis C. B reaker at the suggestion of President Wasson. Fred Deming, chairm a n of the “clean u p ” committee, spoke at some length on the subject of cleaning up the public parking space in the Kelsey block. He said that the chain stores w e re not only willing but anxious to co operate in correcting this defect. Melville A. Kelsey, in a com m u nication to Mr. Deming, stated that he would pay half the costs of containers for garbage if the C h a m b e r of Commerce would pay half. It was felt that this w as a benevolent civic gesture on the p a r t of Mr. Kelsey and his kind offer will probably be taken ad vantage of. As no regulation has as yet been enforced against those m e r chants who continue to scatter debris at the rear of their stores, an ordinance is being sought from the Southold Town Board w h ich will be enforced to its fullest ex tent. Sign to Indicate Shopping Center If a plan, subm itted by Fred Deming, is carried to copipletion, M attituck will have a neon sign at the Four Corners intersection indicating thd shopping center. As the shopping center of M a tti tuck is off the m a in highway, such an indication should prove of great benefit to our mex’chants, and the plan of Mr. Deming’s m e t w ith unanim o u s approval. The m a tter is being investigated. In closing the meeting, which consumed approxim ately three and a half hours, a m e m b er of the Fire D e p a rtm e n t cited instances w h e re curiosity seekers had hin dered the w o rk of the firemen in responding to a fire. He stated that upon the sound of the fire alarm the law decrees that cars m u s t pull to the curb until the last piece of fire fighting appa ratus has passed. This law has not been enforced, consequently the w o rk of the firemen has been ham p e red upon several occasions. I t is our duty as citizens of M a t tituck to assist the fire departm e n t in every w a y possible r a th e r than hinder them. FIRED FIRST SHOT A G erm an launch, w ith a c u tter in tow, w a s speeding across the harbor of Guam on the fateful m o rning of A p ril 0, 1917, the day that America entered the World War. Out on the bay lay .the in terned warship Cormoran. its Teutonic crew unaw a re that P res ident Wilson had just signed the w a r resolution. Suddeny a shot whistled across the bow of the launch, followed by two others. The first shot was fired by Corporal M ichael Chockie, one of a party of fifteen U. S. M a rines, commanded by Lieutenant W. A. Hall of the Navy. Every seafaring m a n understands this manifest command to “heave to.” The enem y launch im mediately surrendered. M eanwhile the G o v ernor of Guam had sent his aide in a barge to the interned Cormoran, de m a n d ing her surrender. H e was complying w ith orders received from the Navy D e p a rtm e n t at Washington, w h e n w o rd of our entry into the w q r had been flash ed to the faraw a y naval station on the Pacific;' I Soon the aide borded the w a r ship and inform ed her captain of the surrender order. B u t the G e r- 1 m ans had anticipated his errand, and the Am erican scarcely had time to leave w h e n the vessel be fore''it w as blown up by its own I crew. For the next half hour small ! boats in the harbor were picking , up survivors. More than six m o n ths later, on October 23, the m e n of B a ttery C., Sixth Field Artillery, F ir s t Divi sion, hauled a gun up on the firing line near Bathlemont, and sent a shell screaming in the general di rection of the G erm an lines. It was A m erica’s first hostile shot in France. B u t the bullet th a t Corporal Chockie, of the U. S. Marines, fired across the bow of the G e r man launch at the isolated naval station in the Pacific on April 6, was Am erica’s first shot in the- World War.
