THURSDAT, FEBRUARY 9, 1 9 3 9 T H E WATCHMAN / PAGE NINE SPORTS By FRANK DAWSON, Jr. I THE SMOKEHOUSE I I t With both the High School and Town squads leading their re spective leagues, Mattituck holds the basketball spotlight this week end, so without further philandering we give you the following scraps cf sport news picked up during the past week: . -‘ k ,:- ^ DID YOU KNOW THAti U^rry Mpshftr, ,S 9 Uthd;^ptpn’s star forward, has never had the expeFlince gained by playing'on a high school squad — Mosher Joined the semi-pro ranks and learned his basketball the hard way, so that he now rates as one of the league’s outstanding forwards * * * a weak leg and his recent success as a referee In the Eastern Sunrise League kept Fritz Leonard from Join ing the Mattituck forces in the second half race * * * The only reason for Coach Goldsmith’s refusal of Mr. Garelle’s generous offer, allow ing the Southolders to practice and play on the local court, was the fact that the Southold squad is made up of Southolders, and the trip to Greenport is much more convenient than the journey to Mattituck * Coach Muir'has deserted the Mattituck town team forces be cause his coaching activities keep him from traveling and practicing with the team. * * * * SCHOLASTIC TIDBITS: Mattituck’s 18-16 win over Hampton Bays was much too close for comfort, but the game proved that no team in the Section Five race can be called a set-up — in fairness to the Blue and Gold squad we must say that they were greatly handi capped by the loss of Bond and Duke — Fouls was the cause of Duke’s exit in the third quarter of the Hampton Bays fray * * • Joulting Joe OstroskI of Southold holds high scoring honors in Sec tion Five competition with 34 points — Mattltuck's “Jazz” Jazombek is a close second with 29 * * * The overtime victory of the Mattituck Junior varsity squad in the Hampton Bays encounter leads us to believe that Coach Muir has built up an aggregation that will mon opolize the Section Five crown in the near future — The J. V.s led by Rambo, Strickland and Demchuck have, yet to be defeated in Jeague competition * * * Mattituck draws a bye this Friday, but the locals will see action on the 13th when the Bonacers from East Hamp ton meet the Blue and Gold outfit in a non-league battle * * * Southold’s Scarlet and Gray clad quintet kept pace with the high flying Mattituck outfit when they handed Shelter island a 29-17 lick ing last Friday night — Coach Goldsmith Informs us that the Island ers are the fastest, quintet they have met this season — The Shelter island forwards travel too fast for accurate shooting, which leads us to believe that they will afford tougher opposition when they play on the larger courts of Southold and Mattituck — Skwara and Dick- «rson continued to be the backbone of the Southold defense as they kept the Islanders from scoring a field goal during the second half of the past game * * * Southold has successfully completed their new gym ahead of schedule, and they will play their first home game against Hampton Bays Friday night — Coleman and Mead will offi ciate at this battle. * * * * LEFTS AND RIGHTS ABOUT THE FIGHTS: Here’s some of the latest entries in the Golden Gloves tourney to be held at the Polish Hail in Riverhead, February 16 — Eager, Klein, Dougherty, Oepta, Dunn, Harris and Wilson will be featured on a card which headlines such sluggers as Ed Bernie, Myron Carter, Wild Willie Brooks and Strickland * * • Sydney Frank, paperweight champ, will see action against the local contender for the mythical paperweight championship, “Snowball” Tucker * * * The Polish Hall, with its latest heating facilities, shower rooms and newly Installed ventilating system, will make things easier for both the fighters and spectators ■* * * A capacity crowd is expected, so get your ducats early, fans — Tickets may be purchased at McCabe’s, Riverhead; Perry’s Drug Store, Quogue; Sportsman’s Cigar Store, Greenport, and the Newlns Department Store, Westhampton. * * * * REVIEWING STAND: Big Ed Danowskl’s appearance in Matti tuck’s Green and White spangles should help the locals along the rocky road to the second half championship — Big Ed, a great team player, may team up with Hassllnger, Hogan, Kewin and DePetrls to form one of the Eastern Sunrise League’s outstanding quintets * * * Mattituck’s 37-26 win over Sag Hacbor was the second straight defeat suffered by the Whalers — The absence of Larry Gangl, hurt in the Bridgehampton game, seems to be the reason for the Whalers’ sudden downfall * * • Most of Southampton’s 37 points scored in last Monday night’s game, came in the third period, after the locals had run up a commanding lead — The Southampton offense was crippled by the loss of their stars, Godbee and Pierce. * * * * HATS OFF DEPARTMENT: With another great week of basket ball tucked away in the record books, we are proud to raise our dog eared fedora in salute to ~ Walter Hogan for his return to form In the past three games — Freddy Hassllnger for his great sharpshoot- Ing — “Jazz” Jazombek and Joe OstroskI in their battle for high scoring honors in their section — And last but certainly not least, we wish to salute both the Mattituck town team and the High School squad for being the outstanding quintets In their respective leagues. • That's all fans # BASKETBALL SCHEDULE MATTITUCK HIGH SCHOOL Monday, Feb. 13 East Hampton at Mattituck Friday, Feb. 17 Shelter Island at Mattituck Friday, Feb. 24 Mattituck at Southold Saturday, Feb. 25 Mattituck at Riverhead Hampton Bays Loses To M.H.S. 18-16 Mottituck Seconds Also Win After Overtime Period; Jax- ombek Leads Scoring With Six Points The MHS basketball team con tinued their winning streak by defeating Hampton Bay's 18-16 in a hard fought game at Hampton Bays last Friday.
