PAGE SIX T H E WATCHMAII THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 9 , 1 9 3 9 STRAND THEATRE Drama as sharp as the crack of a Cossack’s whip fills “Ride a Crooked Mile,” a new thrill-film, which plays at the Strand Thea tre this Friday and Saturday. The strange central figure of the drama played by TamirofT, is an unbridled Cossack chieftan who tries to carry the customs and life of the Russian steppes to the plains of Kansas. Excellent per formances are also turned in by J'rances Farmer, playing a tem- pestous Russian girl, and hand some Leif Erikson, who is cast as Tamiroff’s high-spirited son. In his first starring role since making his mark in Hollywood felt ns a featured player in \Angels With Dirty Facefe,” “The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse” and “Chime School,” Humphrey Bogart, fildom’s ace gangster, will star in “King of the Underworld,” the associate film on this double feature bill. Kay Francis, cast as a surgeon, plays the leading feminine role and heads a notable supporting cast. Although “King of the Un derworld” is a crime picture, it is not without its humorous twist. The capable Bogart, possessing a Napoleonic complex, really think^ he is the king of crime—so much so, that he kidnaps a young nov elist, played by James Stephen son, and commands him to write a biography glorifying the ex ploits and achievements of “Red” Gurney, which is Bogart’ char acter name. A co-starring team of Wallace Beery and Robert Taylor makes its first appearance in “Stand Up and Fight,” outdoor action drama describing the bitter rivalry be tween the railroad and stage coach lines of the 850’s. The pic ture will be shown at the Strand Sunday, Monday and Tues day. Making the team a triumvi rate, Florence Rice wins her most important assignment to date as Taylor’s leading lady. A distin guished featured cast includes Helen Broderick, Charles Bick ford, Barton MacLane, Charley, Grapewin, John Qualen, Robert Gleckler and Clinton Rosemond. The gaudy, lusty turn-of-the- century days when “Zaza,” the music hall darling, set all Paris swooning with a swish of her skirt, and with a wink of her eye set tongues wagging from Moscow to Chicago, are brought back With all their color and lavishness in “Zaza,” the new Claudette Colbert starrer, which will be the presen tation at the local theatre next Wednesday and Thursday. Against the picturesque backt ground of gas-lit PaVis—with the hansom cabs, the can-can dan cers, the frou-frou decor and the midnight champagne suppers— “Zaza” tells the never-to-be for gotten story of the flirtatious mu sical hall favorite who risked open scandal for the man she loved and whose final tragedy all the: applause of Paris could not drown out. Miss Colbert, in one of the most unuslap arts of her career, brings out all the gayety, tempestuousness and pathos of the well-loved character. Prominent in the brilliant cast supporting Miss Colbei’t and Mar shall are Bert Lahr, Genevieve Tobin, Constance Collier, Helen Westley and Walter Catlett. San Francisco’s Loring Club, a male chorus which sang on Trea sure Island in a pre-Exposition concert, was organized eight years before the Metropolitan Opera Association. Floor space of 120,000 square feet has been made available in the Palace of Fine Arts at the 1939 California World’s Fair on Treasure Island. Anatomy of the heart and func tions of heart valves will be dem onstrated in an unforgettable ex hibit at the 1939 California World’s Fair, by use of a huge model.
