PAGE FOUR T H E WATCHMAN THURSDAY, JULY 14, 19 3 8 ^oivn (Hy Jimmie Downs) _______________ ' Norma I-!mnuior. of A<niel)opriie and HlflK<’WO(i{l, has hf'cn cnjoyinf? tliR oxoltKtnent In the former city and also the privileges of a fjearn- er’s Permit, (for driving a Kasollne l)nKKy). We were ext>ectlnn- to en joy the invigorating persona lit*’ of this fair yoiins person for a t least a weel<, l)ut Norma suddenly cliansed her mind in favor of Home n»d Steve (or was it Hiick?) Those wlnKod creatures brlnR to IIS, via th a t familiar (Irapevlne Telegraph, a rum o r which concerns one of our Oyster Town lassies who has been in Hrooklyn for many /i moon. Edith was mentioned not bo Ions ago, hy this column, in con nection with a certain “Pete.” We hear now that the Miss Hulse is vacationing bacl< here in Greenport before changing: her name to I’et- erson next Septeml)er. Congrats — .lohn! Your huml)le correspondent was m a k i n g a puny attempt to grow an upper-lip decoi’ation which prom p t ed the verbal sentiments of Oak (irove’s petite Clara. Apparently this little lady simply abhors this type of shrubbery — especially on Artie Frasatti (one o£ Lance Shaw’s P r a s s - a r t i s t s ) . We are interested to know the reason Klm h u r s t ’s Laura H u r s t spends a great part of the Summer a t the Port. Would it be that she’s visiting with relatives—or friends? The better circles of the County Seat will soon pi'odiice an officer of the militant variety. We are in- fromed that Clair, of tbe House of Dugan, will go Army in the near future. We also have heard that «^enerai Pershing has gone into re tirement. Everyone knows the possilillities of one of Riverhead’s well known men - aliout - town, but we didn’t know that Hill Elton had acciuired a goat-coinplex until after hearing about that cigarette-eating per formance. W h y not try plain Apple- plug—It’s cheaiier! Ah, Merle has t h a t new swim suit and its hue is a delicate shade of pink—satin. We can imagine how marvelously it will blend with lier blonde tresses, but of course we wonder how “Doc\ will like it. MY my n'things, we didn't know that! Two of Aquebogue’s younger swains, Ted Sllvonlck and Hill Downs, ventured !i visit to t h e c a r nival last week in Southampton. It was on a Saturday night and every thing was under control until they met up with Mary and Della Hayes. Of the hours following, your re porter knows nothing, (much) Ted believes in a well-roimded week-end but he didn’t figure on such strong competition fi-om liuck Hallock the other evening In a cer tain young lady’s front parlor. He also didn’t figure on tlie younger- brother-vigll and neither did Huck. liUSt Sunday’s ‘Funnies’ revealed the reunion of the now famous Terry and tho Pirates ((ulntet. — M'oi ry. Pal, Hurma, Connie and IMg Stoop. We were ail relieved that they liad at last gotten together again except Sliadow who was ilis- appoinft'd with Hnrma’s display of affection for Pat liyan. Never fret. Shad, try c(jnc«'ntrating on 'I'he (lUU)p’s .Matilda or 1-ltMe Orphan Annie, Wt> simply can’t umb'rstand how such conservative - looking gentle m e n as “'I'hose 'I'hrt'e <!ups’’ I'an look and act so funny without half trying, but |>erhaps that is the se cret of their sui'cess. That silver cup, whlcli we still hear about, was well iilaccd. Hye the bye, what liapiiened tu Herb’s brain-child, “The Shotgun Jbjnor Uoll” ? The refison for the drummers- t<lumi) in the Oak Crove swing grouj) t'un be traced to Mo who ab- Bent-n>indedly left his foot-p.'dal on a subway train the other week. Incidentally, while the boys were In New York gathering information and muteriul they made a pouple of injportapt purchases tn music. They do those things. Bob will have to change the Pniss arrangement if L a i r y Kllpp doesn't become more careful. Soon er or later the lower i>art of that sllde-ti’ombone is coming out on the dance floor. Wes is crazy about the new Hase Viol. Tie embr.'ices it so lovir>gly. Petter be careful when a certiiin Orient Miss is pre.‘?ent. It is often wondere'd how I{lp can play so W(?ll without notes, l)Ut we’ve come to the conclusion that while he looks straight ahead, as he usually does, he’s gettlTig the nece.ssary inspiration from “The Ctli'l in the Swing,” The lads, who make the music go round n’ round, at the Orove are plamning a “Swing Concert” to J>e held on their home-grounds and to be participated in by many of the North Fork's swing groups, W^e are promised more Information plus de tails late this week. The Idea is a ringer and should be well accepted by the many bands. The 7 Seas Jias in.=!talled an a p propriate variety of music which we agree suits its atmosphere. A lew palm trees and one would al most believe th a t Arshamomaque had gone Hawaii, Wildwood State Park, that beau tiful summer playgroimd and spot for campers, seems to fascinate a fdw of the lads round n’ a b o u t this section of the woods. Since Hfe- guiird Corwin has been putting in his nine hoi;rs per wo hear all m a n ner of nice things about the place. Oh yes, what about th a t lassie known as Irma who is causing Clem’s current nightm a r e s ’.' Seeking adventure this combina tion arose in time to observe tlie Sfin do the same and hurrying to North Fork’s extremity caught the fii’st vessel to the city of gobs of Gobs. (New London). T5eing opti mistic sometimes helps and with a dash of luck we saw (out of one tired eye) old Sol break through fog banks at about mid-Sound. A\’e noticed that m a n y others retained that optimistic temperament and among them were the sisters, Alyce and Katherine Nugent and Mrs. Clifford Utz of Greenport, who con sented to being photographed for this column. Unfortunately the film did a Jacknife over the Catskill’s railing while your cam e raman wa.s’ in the proces of reloading and — Splash! No Pics! The three young ladies mention ed were met at the New London pier l)y I\Ir. Utz and one Theodore Granger of New Haven. Being previously invited to join them, the group, including your con-esi)ond- ent. dro-ve to New Haven where it was decided to first view the col lege city from East Hock which seems to be a famous jumi)lng-off place for dissatisfied individuals. (from wha<, we hear). This rocky affair rises several thoui^ands of I feet above the City and a road leads, in a wlnd-nbout-way to the summit. A rocky pathway also ex ists for the alpine-minded. (Mr. and Mrs, Utz demonstrated their moun- tain-descending abilities). At the top one would hardly exjiect to see what actually meets the eye. There Is a large well-kept Park and p a r k ing-ground and it appears to be popular with holiday picnickers. About noon the suggestion that the party dine at flu r r y ’s soimded ri bit welcome after all the rugged exercise. ]''ollowlng lunch and a tour of the City and its Beaches then finally the drive back to the London town that day was com pleted on the other side of the Sound. For the return trip We boarded the latest addition to the New Lon don-Orient Ijine. It’s a real Steam er with twin propellers and bears the name ‘Yale.’ A cozy little craft, we comment, th a t harbors a Bar and Band. The ship’s Lounge Is modernistically furnished and, u n like the Catskill, it’s open-air deck (top) is accessible to the public, which makes it a grand place to be during those night cruises happen- ng three times per week from Mon- ,tauk to New Lond.on and return. Uncle Sam will stick around and break the sad news to our great giandchildren that we are on the last lap of what they were to spend upon reaching maturity. SUNOCO SERVICE STATION CHAS. Tots Elnjoy Birthday Party At a recent birthday party little Miss Joan Wickham of Mattituck entertained several of her little friends. The event was her fourth birth- xlay and her first major party. From left to right they are: First row, Joan Wickham, Nancy Duryee, David Tuthiil and Jack Hudson. Second row, Veronica Adams, Peggy Anne Wickham, Audrey Cox, Gay Hudson, Shirley Tuthiil and Joyce Tuthiil. Some men sit around and talk about the good old days while Uncle Sam is taking care of them, and forget th a t they liad to w’ork in' the so-called “good old days.” The average husband .apparntly believes now days that if you think twice before you, tell the wife where you were after work hours, you’ll lie anyway. r r M.
