July 19 Deadline For Governdnent Offer On Bridges County Superintendent of Hlgh- I ways Hermon F. Bishop has been advised by PWA ofRcials a t W a s h ington that Federal aid of an out right grant of $1,637,181 would be made tcnvard the cost of construct ing the two Shelter Island bridges, and an offer of the government to purchase revenue producing bonds up to $880,000. This offer is made contingent upon the Board of Supervisors de positing in the construction account $1,121,000 to assure complete fi nancing of the project, the esti mated cost of W'hlch la $3,638,181. The deadline for either accepting or rejecting the offer Is set for July 19. Mr. Bishop Immediately took the m a t t e r up with Chairman Green- halgh of the Board of Supervisors, stating the provisions of the docu ment as laid down by PW A officials and suggested an early conference be held between Chairman Green- halgh, the members of the road and bridge committee; a representative of the State Department of Public Works and the county engineer. He pointed out a request for a grant of $200,000 had been applied for from the PWA to be used In the regular road building pro.gram and likewise the sum of $300,000 from the 1938-39 road program could be made available without impairing that program to any considerable extent. Mr. Bishop added: \II we fail to | act promptly, effectively /md com pletely, we will have failed in our responsibility as holders of i^ubllc f)fRce and public t r u s t . ” Economy Ads 1c a word.
