Long Island. To appreciate such a flow of water, one might think of it as aliout eighteen hundred 42 gallon barrels per minute. The total of 108,000,000 gallons which passes through the condensor daily would supply the water reiiuirements of a city with a population in excess of a million. The accompanying photograph shows one end of this ccmdensor, but It is difficult to realize from the photograph its dimensions, which are about 31 feet long, 20 feet wide and 40 feet high. In other words, it occupies the space of a good sized residence. It weighs 450,000 pounds or 225 tons. The surface for condensing the steam is made up of lO.SlO one- inch tubes, each 23 feet long, w'hlch; placed entl to eml would extend fifty miles, enough to reach across T.ong Island several times. The total condensing ‘surface has :in area of 05,000 s<iuaie feet, or ap proximately IJ acres. This huge jjiece of 0 (niipment is typical of the machinery r('<|ulred in the jjresent daj' electric power plant, to supply the constantly growing re<iuirements of the con sumers. It is *antici|)ated by the liOng Island I.ighting Comiiany that this adtlitioii to productive capacity will keep step with the continuous tjrowth of l.ong Jslantl. Bomb Exploded in Hand While Albert Martbcchia, pro prietor of a cigar store in Green- port, was holding a bomb in his hand on the Fourtli, it was acci dentally Ignited, with the result that Martocchia sustained severe burns and lacerationfa of his hand. The same evening a large tpian- tity of fireworks on display outside •his store caught fire, but the ma- Joi-ity were salvaged before they all ignited and serious damage was averted. ALUMNI OFFICERS Follo'wing the banquet given by the Greenport High School Alumni Association, the following officers of the association were elected 'for the ensuing year: Otis Burt, presi dent: Hilary Corwin, vice president; Mrs. Fre'd Syrett, Jr., (secretary; I’hilip lUikehiar, treasurer. Stan ford Thornhill was made chairman of the banquet committee. Bring In Disabled Boat 'While the Coast Guard Patrol Boat 833, stationed at Greenport, was diagging for the body of Irv ing Wadsworth, who was drowned off^Gardiners Island last week, Chief Boatswain’s Mate McCurdie sighted a disabled yacht. The 34-foot cabin cruiser Christina, owned by J. Roc- ciola of New York, with motor out of commission, was drifting. The 833 towed the disabled boat into Greenport for repairs. It is getting to be rather tire some keeping backs to the wall with no.ses to the grindstone.
