PflOE EIGHT T H E WATCHMAN THURSDAY, JULY 7, 1938 I ^out/i down (By Jimmie Downs) Clem Nettimo muHt be In-the- monoy, now. VV’e miw a notice to the effect that he w a s ' a winner in the lx)ng Green Sweeps which has its headquarters in Detroit. W e claim a beer on that Opera prospect. • * * \Susie” Tuthlll. who has been Been often with the handsome a u t o mobile salesman, is wishing now that her vacation hadn’t begtm u n til July 1st. It's all over now and the only thing to show for It are three sweaters which she knitted during the lovely weather we had. \Susie\ did try swimming a t N a s sau Point, taut old Sol couldn’t be coaxed from behind its cloudy lair. ♦ • ♦ N a v y won the Varsity race at the Poughkeepsie Regatta without the aid of Corwin, Downs, etc. We felt sorry for the Syracuse crew which took its wetting — on the outside. P. S. Oh yes, It rained, (that’s w h a t kept F.D.R. away, too.) * * * G e o r g e Demetrlou’s .Cocktail , Lounge is drawing th a t select group which appears In time to consume delicious hors d’oeuvres (plates n’ plates of it). Dot Tatum and Franny Menendez (remember them ? ) were enjoying theirs a t a quiet corner table while a t the counter Streaky Evers, munching seriously on a toothpick, proclaims th a t his motto after this week’s column will be “Mumms The Word.” * * * Two Aquebogue lads, Bucky Hal- lock and Jesse Goodale, tripped It to Ithaca in behalf of the 4-H Club of t h is section. While there we hear from Bucky to the effect th a t he sees very little of Jess because of a certain E a s t Marion gal. ♦ * ^ * A touch of homesickness foos us (we mean ‘floors us’) when we visit the cute little Inn at Beixedon. The homey atmosphere Is something i th a t gets one under the skin—like I a tatoo artist’s Ink. Sipping a long | one at the rugged-looking Bar we hear th a t the annual Alumni B a n quet Is under way at the adjoining hostelry and soon the banqueteers come wandering In to find tables. At their head Is Vic Van Waggner, ■who we later see with Elenore Smith a t the Grove. Several more couples. Including Kenny Dean - Emily Syrett, Jimmy M c M a n n - P a t Salter, (or is it her sister): Bob Morrls-Betty Russell and Frances deLala-Elsle Thornhill, t1 n d their way onto the dance area which is now fortified with a new band call ing themselves The Arshamoma- queers. * * • We learn that Montauk was a trifle too stifling for our Merle Pem b e r t o n who has returned to the North Fork — and the Jitterbugs. Did we or didn’t we predict that'? AVe learn, too. that Merle will si)ort one of the latest swim .suits! ♦ * ♦ Man yeh man,/ if yez want to hear rhythm which lilts a peak in KizzlInK farenheit, junt ll.sten at tlie (■rove wlien l5ol< and IJo go into their version of Duke l<]llIngton’a ‘Caravan.’ You.can alnio.st see that Oasis and tbf tami'ls taking their 7-day drink. I'inn’i e.vpeot to meet any bottle-throwers (be not dlsap- jMiinted) beeaii.se tluy went out with the other debris several years ago. The two-foot artists escorting Cireenport’s Rodgers Sisters, Toot.s and Kay, took the floor last S a t u r day evening in an exhibition of what the Fraternities and Sorori ties call 'Swing.' Meet Gus Monte and Doctor Spinelli. (Jack Peck- ham isn’t In their shadows either). That brings us to mention the inspiration at the bottom of all this. His name is “Bill” Wilson and he taught the Grove’s pre.sent sotirce of music what there was to know before they went commercial. Bill and Mrs. Wilson came back to Greenport from Bristol, Conn., to visit friends and view his Proteges in action, and we are the ones to know of his feeling of satisfaction. * * * At le Patio, the rendezvous of Rlverhead's Younger Set, we find the B u r g e s s - K a r n e r s troupe look ing over the possibilities for a grand and glorious summer. Hello Edna—hello Jack—oh, hello Clem! * * * A week ago we heard that H. Ellsworth Corwin (Hi to you) came through with flags flying in the Life Guard exams held a t Jones Beach. The only thing now was the appointment to Wildwood State Park. The latest is th a t you may see our Horsce (by appointment only) during beach hours, but please don’t go doing any unneces sary drowning to seek our hero’s attention. * * « W h a t young Oyster Town dental nurse was figglty like a Roman Candle last 4th at a lake shore dance spot when her elongated man ot the soil failed to report? # * « At last we catch a glimpse of Rlverhead’s first male gift to the Port, Bill Lucas. We found him $40,000 Hospital Drive Will Begin In August The Eastern Long I.sland H o s pital at Greenport will start a drive to rjvlse $40,000 in August, when, it i.s hoped, a contract will be let and actual construction be- gtm on the proposed new two- story fireproof l)uilding, so needed by the ho.spital. The residents of the North Fork are expected to do their part towards the erection of the much needed hospital facili ties, which are so needed by E a s t ^n d people for the better health protection of their families. I’lans for the new building are being held down to the lowest cost consistent with efllclent operation. The building now proposed is be ing planned so as to fit in with further construction later on, when it Is hoped a complete new hos pital can be provided. The present program was imdertaken as a con servative step, which can success fully be achieved at this time. Your help is needed to do this, so assist in this most worthy under taking. Season Starts With a Bang at Canoe Place trying to puzzle-out the rhythm of Traveller’s band last Sunday even ing, in company of Patchogue’s younger elite. Bill looks healthy and he appears to be happy. * * * Herb McCarthy is ‘all goose pimplish’ about the foot-high lov ing cup presented last 4th to the^ Bowden S q u a r e Entertainm e n t Committee (of one) for the Best Comedy displayed by Those Three (3uys—Max, Red and Bill. • « * Streaky Evers has lost his zest for the Oyster Village (now that he’s become a Playboy) and has renewed old acquaintances in Cen ter Moriches, (thanks to Pete Downs) Streaky has receijitly been added to the list of Downs’ I n f o r m ation and Message Service, patrons. The sum m e r .season .started at Canoe Place Inn In a big way over the holiday week-end. The biggest hit of the current season's num e r ous attractions at the famous resort is Ray O’H a r a and his ten-piece entertaining orchestra. On Saturday night the A r t h u r M u r ray dancers. Miss Gertrtide Kir- wan and Gregory Stevens, who are at the Inn for the season rendering instruction and exhibitions in the dance, gave a beautiful and grace ful Interpretation of the modern dance. As though not to be out done, former Governor Alfred E. Smith and Mrs. Smith gave their own exhibition of the style of the dance of t h e days of long ago. On Sunday night a big apple was put on with almost everyone in the room joining in. The week-end a c tivities indicate a big year for the Inn’s twenty-first season, as well as for all the Hamptons. Cutworms are six-footed creatures with a liking for newly set tomato, cabbage and similar plants. To control them, scatter a poi»t)n bait on the ground near plants that are likely to be chewed off by the in-^ sects. Economy Ads 1c a word.
