The Kods of distrifnitloxi are very tickle fellows. They frustrate the plans of the most careful f)ldders liy tantallzlnsl.v jilacing Kind's over <Ji]eens and Aces over Kin^s, while at other times they rewai-d the overlddders by graciously placing the riRht cards just where they are needed. Kverythiner was breaking' luckily fo r North and South when the above board came into r>lay. Perhaps this acccnmts for North's optimism in arrivins at a gam e in spades. AV'hen North bid 2 spades over South's 1 spade. Kast thonglit that North's hand was none too str<ms:. and decided to pusli the bidding': perhaps forcing tliem into an im- Tnakeable contiact. He bids 3 hearts. South, considei'inp hi.s hand has slightly more than 4 iiotential tricks in spades, liids 3 spades. Xorth. although he has already Jjid his hand to the limit, goes t<> t Thi,^ is his lucky day! South makes 4 spades, because he planned hand carefully from the V)€- sinnin.e. He realized that imleas he used one of North's spades to trump a heart, he would lose tw o lieart tricks, which, with the two dia- mond losei-s. would set the hand one trick. To make his game the adver.se spades must be divided so that the spade Jack is either a singleton or a doubleton in the Kast or West hand. He takes West's henrt Jack with the Ace and leads the heart 3 •which is taken in the Kast hand. Kast returns the sjiaiie 3 and North takes with the Queen. The Cluh Ac e is next led. followed by the dull 2, which South trump.s. South then leads the heart S, his last heart, and trumi>.s with the spade Ace. He then leads the Cluh 4 again trumping in his hand. He then takes the outstanding spades, the Jack falling to the King. The ten of diamonds is next led. West covering with the Jack, North the Queen, and Kast winning with the diamond Ace. Kast and West take only 3 tricks, the Av e and King of diamonds and one heart. Had South carelessly led out the Ace and <.)ueen of .'sjiades at first, he -would have failed to make his contract. They Vireath a sigh of content and pass to the next table, wher e they encounter this hand, and are one of two, out of nine jiairs, to bid and make a little slam: A 8, 4 V A, Q. 10. 9, 7 • A, 10. i • K, Q. 5 * K. The diamonds and <'lubs must break to giv e him 4 tricks in each, and the spade and heart finesses must work to insure him the othor 4 tricks. When Kast play.s the sjiade 3, all these things happen. This is their lucky day! South played the con- tract in the other slam bid, as North rebid his hearts on the 2ncl round, and South made a jump-bi d in no-trump.
