SPORTS I* HITS, RUNS AND ERRORS By JOE SMOLENSKI One of the mo're active sports proponents on the East End'is Buddy C'hew, diminutive matchmaker, of the Suffolk County Athletic Associa- tion . . . Besides his myriad duties Buddy has pioneered amateur box- ing in this county into a position that merits a few bouquets . . . \From the Airport to the Garden\ is the slogan of our young sluggers . . . Watching him instruct the neophyte champions in the finer points of the game wo pause to marvel at ihis enthusiasm and energy . . . His patience is dimmed neither by the awkwardness nor the intractability of the pupil . . . Buddy vests his entire repertoire in the beginner in an effort to produce good clean fighting material ... He receives no compensation for his efforts except the satisfaction of giving latent talent an opportunity to burst into bloom ... A few more sportsmen of his calibre would give athletics in this section a decided boost; and more of our athletes would 'have an opportunity to display their wares in institutions other than Bohack's, Roulston's, A. & P., etc, . . . Buddy will undrape a new amateur boxing show at the Suffolk Airport on the 28th of this month . . . It'll be a swingfest without the benefit of music. * * • Easter eavesdropping: Les Bowden will challenge the winner of tl^e Willie Brooks-Dave Ryan fight to meet his Myron Carter in a middle- weight fight to take place in the near future . . . Both fight in the same free swinging style . . . What a tussle that will be! . . . The petty differences between Jim Gagen and George Stelzer were settled at the latter's 'hospital bed . . . Jim will act as bench manager with George in the capacity of business manager . . . \Champ\ McCaffery, Southold High's mound ace of a few seasons back, and manager of Cutchogue's village nine, was stricken with pneumonia last Sunday and rushed to the Eastern Long Island Hospital ... A great little guy wil[ appreciate a few of you fellows dropping in when his condition permits it . . . His arm held Southold High on Section 5's baseball pinnacle . . .. Vic C'hichaTiowicz of Fordham, will again perform for the Matti- tuck town team this year . . . Jim Norris hopes Mattituck will fare ibetter in league competition than his Detroit Red Wings ... A new face has appeared on iMattituck's baseball horizon . . . Reed, formerly of Bridgehampton High fame, will probably be reserved as one of the cliukkers. * * * It's a woman's prerogative to change the mind, but the North Sihore Baseball League has usurped that privilege by deciding to have more than six teams in their coveted circle after all . . . Center Moriches, after ence beirrg voted out of the league, is considered for re-entry . . The ugly head of opposition was reared by Greenport, but prexy Joe Romanski decreed that the request for re-establishment would be pondered over at this wek's meeting . . . The reason G'reenport vented its spleen Is because a six team schedule has already been composed and only a few weeks remain before the opening of the season . . . The American League ball has been adopted as the official pellet of the league . . . The Falcons have renovated their facade and will now operate umler the Riverhead title with non-members eligible for par- ticipation as well as members of the Falcon faction . . . The team will be sponsored by the Falcon organization . . . Leo Mitchell has with- drawn as manager with Jerry Johnson, Riverhead High coach, succeed- ing him as bench manager . . . Johnny Fafinski remains as business manager . . Watch their smoke this season. • « • Caudal comments: Hot-stovers around the circuit are verbally pro- moting another league on this side of the Island . . . Wading River, East Marion, Calverton and New Suffolk are willing to join . . . Those interested in this venture communicate with John Case at New Suffolk ... I hope this will have no effect on Cutchogue's gate receipts . . . The baseball spirit has even permeated the stoic ranks of womanhood . . . Mattituck High will have a girls' Softball team this season . . . The box-score will replace the fashion.page as popular reading material . . . Bob Lindsay had a great turnout at. his initial practice session Sunday . . . One will get you two that Mattituck winds up in one of the first three places this year . . . Cutdhogue is the only remaining team in the league without a manager . . . Golf, tennis, track, horse- shoes and baseball will be on tap for the high school sports spectator this Spring . . . Shelter Island will undoubtedly be compared to George Wahington in crossing a body of water to meet their adversary . . . But their arms will consist of bats and balls instead of muskets . . . In Europe they're fighting with guns; here, the baseball players are battling with words and threats . . . The only casualties are injured pride in our war . . . Schultz, DePetris, Leilman and Danowski are names that can be found in the same line-up. * « * Error: Every ball player is subject to committing errors no matter how brief his career may be; and this column written by one who oc- cassionally dabbles in the sport is by no means immune to the fault ... A few weeks ago \Brick\ Stelzer's name was mentioned in the managerial feud at Southold . . . The entire article was written in a \tongue in cheek\ manner and had no intention of inciting personr.l ill-feeling , . . Therefore, if any contrary meaning was interpreted this column offers apologies to those involved and hopes to eliminate ambiguous statements in the future.
