T he C ommittee . In the Review last week were given the names of graduates of Freeport School who had registered in college and schools eldewhere for higher courses. One fact noticeable in the list that but one name, Miss Sammons, is given as attending a Brooklyn school, the Adel- phi. Wonder why the Polytechnic, and other institutes of learning were ignored by parents in placing their cliildren in other schools, most of which are many miles away from their homes. In spite of the Hudson-Fulton cele bration to attract persons from its an nual event, the Mineola Fair was again a decided success. The new grand stand\ built in four days to accommodate 2,000 people, the horse show and harness races all were pleasing to the visitors. The exhibitions were of an unusually high order and never did the grounds present such an attractive appearance. The same reliable features were put forth and the industrial exhibitions were many new attractions in offerings for the home, farm and garden. The offi cials of the Society made good again, as we hope and expect they will for many a year to come. The end of the Hudson-Fulton cele bration will be at hand tomorrow and this closes the season in New York of the largest number of carnivals and celebrations held for many a Summer and Fall. The City of New York is getting its own in the matter of cele- bratiorn and, like the farmer in the country in the summer-time, charges strangers double value for almost every thing. We say almost everything for carfares were about the same if you knew how to work the transfers. People from all over the Island went | “ to town” to see the fun and got all, the fun they wanted at increased rates. The celebration was a success, though, and we congratulate the City and those responsible for the success of it. Remarks on the Sewer Question (by a prominent Freeporter) Editor Messenger, Dear Sir:— The discourse on sewerage as given by the sanitary engineer, Mr. William Wallace Young, of New York City, at the public meeting in the Sigmond Opera House last Tuesday evening was to my mind, both comprehensive and convincing. While a very great number were present at this meeting, it is only to be regretted that all tax-payers were [ l . s .] JOHN J. RANDALL, President. WM. S. HALL, Cashier. This method of purification is in stalled for the sewage disposal in the city of Baltimore, and the water dis charged from the same is emptied into the Deleware Bay, where valuable oy- ! on ster beds are located. Before this paper goes to press the Assembly Convention at Mineola will have more than likely nominated Wil liam G. Miller for another term in the Assembly. Mr. Miller has made an efficient Assemblyman and will have considerable work of importance to handle for his district in the coming year. At the public meeting held at Free port on the question of sewerage, everything was said about it except its present need. It was surprising to the writer that those advocating it did not show the deplorable condition that has existed in Main Street and Railroad Avenue, and one instant in particular can be noted if any citizen will go to the Village court room, and I am in formed that the State Board o f Health has the power to compel the adoption of a sewer system if needful, and in that case if the game is not carried out by the Village within t certain given time the State Board then has the same installed which would be perhaps twice the expense to the Village that it would be if toe Village did the work themselves. Experts say that it is only a year or two before a sewer system will h e com pulsory. Don’t wait for an epidemic before carrying out this much needed improvement. Don’t forget the $ip00 voted for is only to be used for making ins, specification's and studying what would be the beet. Druggists F R E E P O R T , N . Y. (66^ steps from L. I. R. R.) wil rai all real estate values more than any other improvement. Futher- more the oyster trade, so valuable to this village requires the ever increasing pollution of the bay water from build ings which from time to time are being built adjacent to the creeks, be stopped. This can only be accomplished by a sewer system by which the sewage is properly collected, purified and dis charged on the meadows in such a state of purification that nd harm can , result from the same. Inasmuch as the taxpayers of Freeport are at this time considering a situation that sooner or later will have to be faced, I would strongly advise anyone who is not al ready familiar with the excellent re sults that can be obtained and feel ap prehensive of possible nuisance or harm from a sewer disposal plant, to inquire for themselves and verify the truth in the above statements and those of Mr. Young. I feel sure that after making such an inquiry no one will hesitate to vote for the appropriation required for defraying the expense of a study of the problem and a plan, which plan will be an asset to the village whether the same is carried into effect a t once or in the future.
