South Side of Long Island A reliable means of communication between the villages of Rock ville Centre, Baldwin, Freeport, Roosevelt, Merrick, Bellmore, Smithville South, Wkntagh, Seaford, Massapequa and Amity ville. Issued Weekly Subscription $1.00 a Year VOL 2 ., NUMBER 3 FREEPORT AND BELLMORE. N. Y., FRIDAY, AUQUST 6, 1909 PRICE, 5 CENTS Editorially the Record (Amityville) expresses its gratification that other papers have been with it in its fight for recognition in the matter of village affairs, patronage, etc, and both the Freeport papers are mentioned in the list, this paper being one. No thanks need be given any publication for standing by a newspaper in its honest clean fight for it's rights. The editor wh ^refuses his, sometimes, feeble supjwt to a brother editor should have no standing in the newspaper world. An editor’s job is to give clean concise views on a certain question or ques tions, and, as far as possible, make up his article around a consensus of opinion that will be a fair statement of facts with suggestions thrown in by way of good measure. The Record has pldnty of fighting blood in it’s editorial sanctum and we are hoping that that will bring to the paper all it deserves. It’s good enough for any man. In answer to several inquirers during the past few months we will state that Carson's Column, formerly a fea ture of this paper, will be resumed shortly. This department which dealt with county affairs generally and once _ in a while a short talk on Iqcal affairs vices °* the Church, seems to have had many friends and we i hope it will have many more. The writer for this column aims to be fair in his utterances and usually hits the nail on the head. Daniel Morrison is dividing his time between here and his cottage at Nas sau-by-the-Sea. Report reaches us of the wedding Friday of Daisy Harrigan and Everitt Rider. Rev. Mr. Richards performed the ceremony. The vaudeville At the Sigmond has been discontinued for the summer. All others than members of the School may obtain tickets from the scholars at 25 cents. We advise the purchase of tickets before Sunday that thosd in charge may know about how many to nrovide for in the matter of transportation. Should Wednesday be a stormy day, the picnic will be held Thursday. Everyone is invited to go and enjoy the day’s outing. Better look out for your dog! Some miscreant is finding delight in poison ing dogs again. We had an epidemic of this during the winter. The method pursued seems to be to throw a piece of meat on the lawn with strychnine in it. Mr. H. Narwood has had his dogs poisoned and Mr^J. R. Moore’s “ Per ry” had a narrow escape. Capt. and Mrs. David Lawson and Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Goud left Wednes day for a trip up the Hudson to Al bany. ---------------- r r > ' ■ x Mr. and Mrs. H. If.' Cammann left Monday, night on the People’s Line for a ten days’ stay in Canada, stopping in Quebec. They went by way of Lake George and Lake Champlain. Mr. and Mrs. William Floyd of “ Sun- nycroft” are at their estate at Mas tic, L. I. At 1.30 Monday morning a vigorous alarm called the firemen to the home of Garfield Stephens, colored, on Smith Street, where his house was in flames even before the alarm was given, Mr, Stephens, his wife and two children, escaped safely. Ten minutes after the first stroke of the bell the chemical engine was on the ground but it was at once apparent that nothing could be done to save the burning house and all attention was directed toward the ad joining property of Aaron Carman. Only by the most strenuous efforts of the firemen and hearty co-operation of others was Mr. Carman’s house saved. The firemen are very proud of tl&ir chemical engine. Though it has prov en useful at other times, we are told that this is the first time that it had a chance to thoroughly demonstrate its value to the village. With the usual bucket brigade, Mr. Cayman'a house would surely have gone, but as it was, only the porch was slightly scorched, cause of the fire is supposed to have been the exploding fof a lamp which had been left burning. Mr. Stephens saved only a few meagre things which he was able to haul out himself before the fire became too hot. His loss, however, was not great, as he was insured for $200 on his furni ture and he has been allowed $150. Full insurance has been allowed on the house of $950. Mr. Carman has been allowed sufficient to repaint the east and south sides of his house injured by the chemicals, and to replace the win dow panes broken by the heat. Thus, though the Idas as about $1200, it is fully covered by insurance. We un derstand that negotiations were on for the purchase of the property by Mr. Stephens from Mrs. Aaron Carman, the owner, but that no money had been paid and that now Mrs. Carman does not care to sell. Mr. Stephens and family have gone to live in Freeport. The Merrick Gun Club are shooting every Saturday afternoon. The scores last Saturday were as follows: H. Greenwald 19, S. Baldwin 18. R.
