*~ Official Paper, The Record, The News and The Owl * September 21, 2000 By Wenov Myire-Lew It just struck me as funny. I was driving past Gutterman's the other day and I saw a gentleman in a distin- guished black suit and a seriously de- meanor who was carrying a pizza into the funeral home: Well, it just struck me as funny This Sunday; Sept. 24, is Rockville Centre's Awareness Walk 2000, orga: nized last spring by high school stu dents interested in promoting respon' sible, drug and alcohol-free behavior Members of the community. are invited to join the drug-and alcohol free youth and drug free and alcohol safe adults The walk begins at the Rec Center with a gathering at 11:30-a.m.and be gins at noon. The<group will walk: ap- proximately two miles up Long Beach Road and then back 'down Brower Av enue. After the walk, sponsored by the Drug and Alcohol-Task Force. the Rockville Centre School District and SADD, community leaders will make Rockville Centre's Long Island NEWS and the Owl is published 52 times each year. Periodicals Postage at Lynbrook RO. and additional mailing offices. (USPS 6318-640). This paper wl brief remarks 'to the assembly. All money donated will be given to Tempo, Inc..-a treatment program for young people. Walkees are.advised to bring their.own (appropriate) refreshments Last year I dragged my son down to the Awareness: Walk that got snowed dut. We put on our mittens and hats and planned to walk.in the snow, which would have been dangerous and slip- pery I suppose. I regret that I may have lost that -window of opportunity. This Sunday, my son will be playing soccer and I guess I will be walking without him It would be nice to share that long walk; éven: though he would probably find some other kids and walk- With them and I would end up on my own anyway. We could talk about what wis- dom 1 have acquired as I have aged so gracefully. I wish I thought the voice of reason could protect him from mak- ing some sort of bad choice someday I have found that drugs and alcohol appeal to those who are either trying to find themselves, or lose themselves Me - 1 pretty much know who and where I am and am pretty satisfied. And if I wanted to escape from reality, I would take a nap, This particular view- point is popular with older folks One of my favorite jokes, now that I am old, is this: Cocaine is God's way Of telling you, you have too much money. I might not have enjoyed the humor as a teenager, but now that I'm old, it's pretty darn funny 1 also remember being a teen and thinking you couldn't trust anyone over 30. Now that I'm.old.»of.course, only people over 30 are trustworthy. Well predictable anyway, The routine: that life becomes is comforting in @ strange way to persons of a certain age. A little excitement now and then is okay, but risking life and.limb-driving with someone who has been.drinking is not as exhilarating as it orice-was And the-real problem with.seeing life from this that you are ke tage point of age is y.aware that there are no do-overs. If you die, you d. get up and start back where mt, - And when life deals you a ruu‘ r you don't have the option of mi game off or starting a new play the cards you Bet anid hope f - best. ' On ine Awareness Wij} th will pass a spot on Browe, where some teenage drunken lost their lives and destroyed a was probably because of Mus.” stop Sign was put in Of Hamij; . lives were lost and no am medial action can do anys them. So talk to your kigs on the walk. If they are come walk yourself. | w uld , great numbers of commuy; participate in this high school kids 'It w everyone supports the a positive differenc more the merrier I'r going to snow thi for errors.
