Lay faculty demonstration embers of the faculty from Holy Trinity High School in Hicks- ville and St. John the Baptist High School in West Islip, were joined by their fellow union members at a dem- onstration on Friday, September 8 in front of the Rockville Centre Diocese. With their current contract having expired on August 31, the teachers are demanding that Bishop James McHugh return to the bargaining table and ne- gotiate a contract that is in keeping with church teachings, providing for dignity, justice and fairness for all workers. \Our members are a vital part of the Catholic school education system,\ said Harry A. Kranepool, president of the Lay Faculiy Association, Local 1261. \Without them there would be no Catholic school education.\ The final proposal from the diocese included a demand that participants increase their contribution to their health insurance. In some cases, the increase amounts to over 360 percent. \Increasing health insurance premiums at this rate, without a cap, virtually in- sures that whatever wage increases our members realize will be taken away,\ said Kranepool;. \Furthermore the Catholic Church owns a huge stake in MDNY, the HMO which provides our coverage.
