r~\ v CLOSE HOME COMING WEEK LABOR DAY? Popular Plan Originally Sug gested For Mechanic’s Con vention in Popular Favor BIG DEMONSTRATION IS TALKED OF Fraternal Society Rushing Plans for Reception of Delegates—Double Celebration May Be Held The idea of a general celebration begiuniig several days in advance of and closing on Labor Day with a dem onstration In connection with the an nual convention of the New York State oCuncIl of the Junior Order of American Mechanics appears to b<- gaining n popularity here as the com m ittee in charge of the arrangements for I tie fraternal society is com p let ing their itrst carefully laid pian.t. There has been considerable discus sion in Freeport since the original .in- made at the annual tournament of the Freeport Fire Department last Sep tember concerning a celebration in which villagers generally and the se cret and fraternal societies particular ly could combine. Originally tenta tive plans.w ere made for such an ob servance. It was the schem e of the citizens who interested them selves in the mat ter to celebrate a home coming week in connection with the celebration of i he Mechanics order. The iirst sug gestions were for a carnival and mam moth demonstration in which every civic and secret society would be rep resented. A parade through the streets of the village was a part of the general plan. There was some talk about a triumphant arch and (he arrangement of a historical souvenir program in which the interesting tra ditions of Freeport should be told. While the M echanics have carried out their program of arrangement without regard to any other, it is un derstood that they are still in recep tive mood, and ‘ he suggestion is made that a citizens’ com m ittee be appoint ed to carry out the original plan for the village celebration. The convention and reception of the delegates on Labor Day and the day following is already planned out hy a com m ittee consisting of J. Huy- ler Ellison, chairman; Gilson H. Kay- nor, treasurer; Howard E. Pearsall, secretary; Stephen \V. Hunt and James W. Cheshire, the convention of the order itself, for It is the first tim e that the State Coun- cil has met outside of a large city. There is much that depends upon the local committee in its arrangements for The reception of the delegates, if the event is successful, it will doubt less have an influence tending to bring other conventions to the sm aller plac- » ned for Labor Day and several trips downto places of interest about the Millinery and Hair Goods Notions, Embroidery, Ladies' Ware Mark of Distinction on Every Hat’ Mrs,' K.
