This Is not Intended to detract from the achievem ent of I ’ilot Allison and his fellow fliers, who tarried the mall across the continent In 33 hours and 20 m inutes last week, b u t rath e r is a tribute to thoea fliers who have clone this feat ln#spite of th e poor equipm ent and lack of arranaem e n te generally for such Im p o rtant w o rk.' T h a t the mail service across the con tinent can bo m a intained w ith a really high percentage is th e opinion of the optimistic young men of this flying sta tion a t H a z e lhurst Field. W ith the new appropriations for the aero mall service available, w ith a new national adm inistration In office willing to try out feasible things to develop the service, the filers here expect to ac'-om- plish much more, b u t they say they cannot do this unless they have funds. It Is a well-known fact th a t 1140,000 was paid for a cot of planes, m o tors and other parts th a t rem ain In the hangars at H a z e lhurst Field, it is as serted this can only be ‘'Junked.'' There may be, It Is said, some salvage In the lot of planes th a t the postal departm e n t had to take over, but so f a r as they are of use to he flying station, they are vorthlese. Some of these planes have never been • a success as fliers, and w e re not before • ley were taken Into the postal service. One man lost his life trying to 11' In one of them . Moot of them have been rebuilt, and the result Is th a t they have become so cumbersome th a t they are useless. It Is said th a t 400 pounds of ballast m u s t be carried In the pose of one of them , and then it Is not safe. W ith all of this \Junk\ removed, with more men and better equipm ent, ihe aero mall fliers a t H a z e lhurst Field hope to give even a bettor account of them selves In the fu tu r e than , handicapped, they have in the past. They expect to m a intain a high per centage of success trip s on their log of the trans-continental Journey, which is the distance lietween H a z e lhurst Field a n d Cleveland. We have consistently followed the market, up and down, which is the only businesslike way to do. We would also remind you that even at the top prices our share of your building was never more than one-third of the total cost of the completed work, oftentimes much less. If we reduce our third of your cost by pne-third, that means that our portion of the reduction ii one-ninth of the total cost. That’s our share. Here arc some of the actual reductions we have made from our highest prices. E ' W ill You Stick? “This Farm Bureau thing costs too much,” said a Nebraska merchant tp several farmers gathered in his store. “County dues are all right, but putting up for a lot of state and national officers is different. You don’t know how they'll spend your money.” “Let’s see, don’t retail merchants have both state and national organizations?” Risked one farmer. s The merchant colored, but admitted they had. The farmer asked if he belonged to any of them. “That’s my business,” sputtered the merchant. “Yes, and I guess the FarmBureau is my business,” spoke up another farmer. “I hadn’t joined it before, but I’m going to now. If a national oiganization is a good thing for merchants and bankers and manufacturers, it’s a good thing for farmers, too.” Phone 180-R? MARCUS H . BU K R ILL M. CP.
