This Is th e first time th a t historical events have been Illus trated and each sign different. Merrick baa an extrem e ly interesting early history th a t peculiarly lends Itself to such a movement, bu t eo has the rest of Long Island w hich was sold for a few bushels of maize by Lord Sterl ing, but the Dutch wt>u|d not recognize the tranftuctlon. and .they had a good backing of stolid soldiers. The original deed of Merrick was giv en by the Sacbome of five powerful tribes of Indians—M o n tauks, Maeeape- quas, W a n taghs, M o r flakes and one It Is not generally know n that a t one tlmo the reeldents of Freeport had to drive to Merrick for th e ir mall and th a t a regular packet line w a s m a intained be tween New York and M errick. A t th a t time M errick had four paper mills th a t made high grade w riting pa per from the rags b rought from New York by the good packet Amerlcif.
