. - ■ s • ■ ■ couiirY REDUCE TOWN ___ RATE FIVE CENTS M |« t of $378,821 Adopted Merrick Road in Village of Freeport to be Fixed The Town Board on Tuesday adopt ed the annual budget and fixed th£ tax rates for the coming year. The general town tax race is 29 cents the |100 or five cents less than the last rate. The Board of Health tax rate is 4% Cents as against 2 cents last year and the highway tax is 24 cents as against 25 last year. The health and highway taxes are paid by taxpayers outside of incorporated vil lages only, while the general town tax «e paid by all the property owners of both the town and incorporated vil lages. This will make the combined town rate for those outside of the vil lages 57% cents on the $100. In ad dition to this are the rates for special lighting, water and fire districts, which are given below. • . The total budget this year is $378,- 814.49, as against $280,249 last year, an increase of $98,565.49. The actual amount to be raised this year is $274,- 814.49, the actual increase over last year being $32,566.49. The difference is accounted for by larger estimated receipts. The principal items making up the increase, besides increases in salaries which were given in fhe last calendar year, include $14,000 in the highway department miscellaneous fund; $10,- 000 for the macadam road bond sink ing fund, $10,000 for tjie improvement of the grounds about the town hall and $10,000 for the payment of certi- cates of indebtedness for the removal of last year's ufiusual snow fall. There is also over $7,000 for new voting ma chines. The macadam road bond sinking fund is created to help take care of $293,000 worth of town road bonds which fall due in 1923. The town has the $ 100,600 received from the last Long Beach purchase, which, with in terest is #c pec ted to amount to about $200,000 when the bonds are due. This amount goes toward retiring the bonds and the town will have to raise the balance of $93,000 before that time. The $10,000 put in the sinking fund this year goes for that purpose. Are You a Good Husband? Do you want to know whether you are a good husband or not? Do you often wonder when your wife kneels down to say her prayers at night, whether she is thanking God for hav ing bestowed you upon her as a life partner, or beseeching the Lord to give her strength and grace to endure you? If you do, check yourself by these points: Do you treat your wife with the courtesy and consideration that you show to any strange woman whom you happen to meet at a dinner party? You have quite a reputation among the ladies for being gallant and chiv alrous. Do you keep that line of con duct for society, or do you hand it out also at home? Do you remember your wife’s birth day and the anniversary of your mar riage without having to be reminded of these august occasions ? And when you are reminded, do you throw a few dollars or a check into her lap and tell her to get something for a pres ent, for you don’t know what she wants? Before you were married yov thought her little fancies important enough to recollect. Do you occa sionally bring her a bunch of violets or a box of candy or the book she has said she would like to read, just to show her that you are thinking of her? Women put an absurd valuation on little attentions, and a very few of them planted along the matrimonial road make it a primrose path to a woman, instead of a track through an arid desert. How do you talk to j^bur wife ? Do you speak to her in a manner that you would not dare to use to a man of your own size and weight ? Do you sneer at her opinions and tell her that she doesn’t know what she’s talking about, and call her a fool? Do you yawn in the\ midst of her stories, and remind her that they are ancient chestnuts, and that she always misses the point of a joke, anyhow? Do you knock everything that she does, and enlarge with brutal candor on her faults and weaknesses ? Did you cease telling her that you loved her on your honeymoon, and has it been years and years since you showed her the least particle of affec tion, or gave any visible sign that you cared for her? Women don’t shed their sweet tooth when they get married, yo\i know, and wife craves affection from her hui Friday, Oct. A g A. Funny creatures, women. They put great stress on words, and any one of them will cheerfully work her fingers to the bone for a man and be glad to do it, if he will only kiss her hand and tell her how he thanks her for all that she does for him. Do you ever do any particular thing to make your wife happy ? Or are you one of the men who think that just being married to him is joy ride enough through life for any woman ? The treadmill is no more monotonous than the daily round of existence for a woman who spends her time shut up within the walls of her home doing the never-ending round of tasks. Do you go with her occasionally to places of amuse ment without having to be dragged there fighting and protesting ? Do you take her out to the theatres or the movies of your own acffbrd now and then ? Do you sometimes spend a hol iday in taking care of the baby and the children and let her have a day of real freedom to herself ? How do you act at home ? Are you a grouch or a ray of sunshine ? Are you one of the men who dump down upon their unfortunate family all the nerves and irritability, and temper, and swearing that they do not dare expend upon their clients, or custom ers or boss ? When yoii put your key in the lock at night, do ^our wife and children come running to meet you, or do they grow suddenly silent and tim orous ? Do you sit silent as a dummy be hind your paper, or are you chatty and chummy with your wife and children ? Do you growl like a bear when your wife asks you if you have heard any news during the day, or do you try to be entertaining, and the life of the party, as you are outside of your own home ? A woman can’t make a happy home by herself. That’s a two-handed job. Nor cai^she carry on a conversation -by herself, though many wives ac quire the monologue habit of trying to break that awful silence that per vades, where the man of the house feels that home is the place in which to gloom. How do you act about money? Do you go fifty-fifty with your wife, or make her feel when the bills come in as if she were a criminal who had de- oured every particle of food, and mon opolized all of the light and heat, and was generally responsible for the high cost of living? Do you give your wife- a personal allowance as her right, or make her come like a beggar to you*f for every penny? Check off these little items of con duct, and you will have a pretty good idea of how you stand with your wife, and what she’s telling the Recording Angel about you.
