No. 2 held a “house warm ing” in their new quarters on North Main Street Monday evening, having as their guests the Village Board of Trustees, department arid company officers and Fire Council. A turkey dinner was served, after which short addresses were made by a number of the enests. The completion and occupancy of this house completes the proper hous ing of all the apparatus of the Fire Department except Patrol This building, which is an ornament to that section of the village, is large enough to provide for two pieces of apparatus, although occupied by only one at the present time. It was ob served at the dinner that Hose 2 has always taken an active part in de partment affairs and has furnished the Department three of its best exec utives: Chief R. H. Mayland, de ceased, one of the only two chiefs who served more than two years as such; Chief Walter B. Cozzens, a charter and still an active member of that company, and the Chief under- whose regime the department mAde its first radical departure from the old style of outside fire fighting, and started “going in after ’em.’’ Chief “Billy” Cornell was an able succes sor to these two men, and one of the best executives and hardest workers the Department ever had. Hose 2 was the first company to have a motor hose wagon, this com ing during the incumbency of Roland M. Lamb as Village President. Mr. Lamb, seeing the difficult task of se curing horses and drivers for this company, suggested to the Fire Council that recommendation be made to the Village Board for a mot or apparatus. Recommendation was accordingly made and that apparatus purchased. Hamilton G. King is the present Captain and has been re-nominated for the ensuing year, as have Albert L. Earle, present first lieutenant, and Frank Johns, present second lieuten ant. Their representatives in the Fire Council are Messrs. King and Coz zens, who, department records will show, moved and seconded the propo sition to submit a proposition for $10,- 000 for a pumper for Hose 4. Second Deputy Chief S. Dimon Smith is also a member of this Company. The members have good reason to feel satisfied with their1 past record, and now, properly housed, will con tinue to help Freeport Fire Depart ment make history. The Fire Council had considered this proposition for a long time, and when it was finally decided upon, the action, taken a^ a largely attended meeting of the Council, was unanimous. The proposition was im mediately opposed, both by those who, like the Village Board, did not think the necessity existed, and by those who do not favor propositions for the Are department. Notwithstanding this, although it was nearly twice the size of any propoaRion ever asked for apparatus, the taxpayers seemed will ing to trust to the judgment of the Fire Council, and the proposition was carried. It will probably be several months before the specifications are secured, bids received and the engine purchased.
