On ,tiie btrtliday annlvenwry of Gtoorge Washington It Is doubly Inter esting now to note that the Father of His Country wa* the first Liberty Bond holder, In the true sense of the term. Washington, from time to time dur ing the Revolutionary War, advanced some $72,500 to the young Covernment kf paying expenses that the Govern ment was under obligation to pay. This sum does not represent all that he actually spent, as later he found he had omitted many Items In the hurry of warfare. The loan consti tuted a non-interest bearing Invest ment In the first national Liberty Bond. To loan thus to the Government en tailed sacrifices on Washington's part which the present day holder of Lib erty Bonds does not have to undergo. To get the funds with which to con tinue the loaning of money to his country he was compelled to sell fimp- erty In Virginia. When the American Army was quartered In New Jersey for the winter, provisions were an scarce ns money, and he ordered sup plies requisitioned from the people. Holders of the requisition receipts given where It was necessary to take food for the soldiers in reality became Liberty Bond holders. Ultimately they received full value In money. George Washington, the first Liberty Bond holder, had to establish the gov ernment which was to repay him. The faith he demonstrated can well be re membered today with the Victory Lib erty Loan soon to he Issued by the country of which lie was the first President. + + + + + + + + -l, -!’ + + '4’ 4 ’ + + + ’l ’ Roan tree, Jam e s 3., A v iation ‘ R o g e rs, P e rcy C - 101st E n g ineers Rollo, A lfred L., Officers T raining C am p R o a toucher, G e o rge A., Corp., Inf., Co. Today we join to celebrate the birthday anniversary of Wash ington, who, when a boy, chopped down his fatheTs cherry tree, and later, though but still a youth, surveyed the trackless forest waste, and always prac ticed simple truth in every proj ect lie embraced. Then when the Revolution broke 'our George stepped bravely to the fore and threw aside our foreign yoke, and saw us safely through the war. No adjectival flourish here could tell in full his epic life, but this we know and hold it dear, he won our nation’s pri mal strife; lie fought, he built, lie sagely taught, he loved I Ills land of liberty, and what ids sac rifice then bought Is handed on to you and me. To him we owe undying debt to keep our na tion's honor bright, and emulate him so that yet we travel hold ing Freedom’s light; we cannot all chop cherry hark, but we van chop the “overhead,\ and, cut ting out some costly lark, buy W. S. S. instead ! 4- + + + + + + ’t ’ + + ’l ’ + + + + + + '!’ HOW W. S. S. INCREASE THE DOLLARS INVESTED If Christopher Columbus, when be discovered America in 1492, hod sold $100 worth of the treasure he took back to Spain and invested It at com pound interest at 4 per cent the $100 would have grown to over $2,000,000,- 000 today, an amount equal to the First Liberty Loan! There were no War Savings Societies in those days, how ever, and Columbus cannot be blamed for failing to provide such an amount for tlie future welfare of the nation which grew up on the continent he found. But dollars can lie put to work now. Invested where they will gain Interest, they work without your aid. Govern ment War Savings Stamps operate on this principle. In five years a War Savings Stamp which cost $4.12 tills year will he worth $5.
