Houses with neither windows or chimneys are being lived in by the people of the Scottish islands, the Hebrides. The peat fire is kept burn ing day and night, and is, in spite of the smoke, the savior of the house hold ; the straw roof, does not keep out the rain, and thus almost neces sitates “b o x - b e d s t h e r e is often more than propinquity of the cows and their manure. The “black houses” are, of course, deplorable and deteriorative; but that is not their scientific description. The fact is that, in point after point, these “black houses” are like organisms built up under difficult conditions, meagerly perhaps, but with remark able adaptiveness. The stones are from the moor; timber is from the sea; lime mortar is expensive; the roof must be molded every year and therefore the walls must be low; moreover, the gales are high. At every point the house is adapted to its fundamental purposes, and what the doctrinaire student or the care less visitor dismisses as unworthy of savages, the product of laziness or perversity, turns out to be a product of long labor and sacrifice, a funda mental part of the only system of agriculture formerly found possible in this island of gneiss rock, clay and peat moss. WOOD PULP FIBER PUZZLES Recent German Invention Is Acknowl edged of Value, but Rivals Have N o t Fathom e d Its Production. There has been much discussion in the German press during recent weeks concerning a wood pulp fiber named “Cellulon,” for which large claims are made as an efficient sub stitute for jute, cotton and other fibers, says the English Board of Trade Journal. It appears to be certain that the fiber is not made by spinning long strips of paper run off reels through water in the manner which German paper textile substitutes have made familiar. The accounts agree in de scribing the process, or processes, as a direct manufacture from wood pulp. The British consul general at Zu rich, who has presented a report to the foreign office, states that the method employed operates on the same general lines as that used for artificial silk manufacture— that is, by squeezing under high pressure through small holes in plates. WOMAN INVENTED TANKS? There is another claimant to the eredit of having originated the tanks, says the London Daily Chron icle. Mrs. E. C. Capron, the wife of a British officer, who possesses the old Highland gift of “second sight,” was informed in a vision as long ago as February, 1915, of the need for movable forts in France, and the actual character of the machines re quired was revealed to her in some detail. With the aid of Capt. K. R. Paterson, now of the school of aero nautics in Egypt, she gave exhaus tive expression to the idea in blue prints, which were bandied about be tween the war office, the admiralty and some technical officers, finally getting lost. Mrs. Capron support ed her claim with much detail of names and dates, and it is said that Mr. Lloyd George is looking into i t A MAN OF INSIGHT. The organization of the numerous ocean and coastal convoys coincided with the appearance in French wa ters of a large number of motor- driven submarine chasers, built in the United Stales for the French navy, said a review of the war made by an expert for the Scientific Amer ican. These vessels embodied all the desired characteristics of high speed and seagoing qualities, and they proved ideal “vedettes de patrouil- les” for the coastal work on which they are employed. Mention should also be made of another type of antisubmarine craft, which in its design and construction is wholly Gallic. This is the “aviso,” which has its counterpart in the British “sloop.” In the “aviso,” the French naval constructors have de- velojied a motor-driven, ocean-going cruiser, which exceptionally well em bodies all the characteristics consid ered essential to offensive anti-U- boat operations, namely, high speed, heavy armament, high free-board, excellent sea-keeping qualities, and a maximum steaming radius. The machinery of the “avisos” may be said to be a product of the war, and it is mainly due to its ex cellence that these vessels have proved so satisfactory under all con ditions of service.
