Not all the tasks tvarships are | called on to undertake have to do with war and the destruction of hu man life and property. A couple of French aursliips were sent out into the Mediterninean some years ago to wage war against a school of porpoises which were doing an immense amount of dam age to the tishing industry in those waters. After three days’ hostili ties, during which quick tiring guns were used with considerable effect, the vessels returned to port tri umphant, having practically anni hilated the enemy. A year or two ago a warship of , Great Britain’s Australian licet was ; given the strange job of capturing i or destroying a mysterious aea mon ster which had been reported off the Falkland islands, the scene of the recent German naval defeat. It is pretty safe to say that the i officers, if not the crew, entertain- I ed grave doubts of the actual exist ence of the frightful creature which i had been described. It was too ter- ’ rifying. hideous, gigantic and fero- , cioue. But shortly after the ship arriv- ! ed in the waters where the monster 1 was supposed to lie in wait for ves- | sels the officer of the watch describ ed a strange looking beast making i toward hi* ship, and it was imme- i diately guessed that this must be the substance of all the alarming tales. And « pretty good substance it proved t oo. An attack was made upon it, and i after some hours’ fighting with har- ! poona and quick firers the mysteri- i oxi* monster, which proved to be a j aea elephant between thirteen and ! fourteen yards long, was slaughter- 5 ed and taken aboard. Some rears ago the Norwegian government aent out a powerful lit tle fleet of warships armed with mines, torpedoes and quick firing guns to exlvrminnte a vast horde of seals which xvas denuding the sea on the nort! ■•c*! coast of all fish life. But the government had reckoned upon tern of thousands of seals, whereas there were millions.
