Among the folklore of the peas antry of Romnania and some of the adjoining Magyar states of eastern Europe is found the story of the ex pulsion of our first parents from the garden of Eden. It runs thus: When Adam and Eve fell, God sent Gabriel, the Magyar angel, to turn them out of Eden as a punish ment for their sin. Gabriel was re ceived moet courteously, food and drink of the best being set before him. Now, Gabriel had a kind heart and took pity upon the poor folk and would not accept their hospital ity, remembering his errand. So he returned and begged that some one else be sent to evict the sinners, as he really could not do it. Then Raphael, the Roumanian angel, was sent and was received as Gabriel had been. He, however, was very fond of a good dinner, and so he sat down and thoroughly enjoyed himself. The feast over, he told the erring pair his errand. They at once began to weep most piteously and beg for mercy. Their bitter sor row .30 touched his after dinner heart that he, too, returned and asked that some one else be sent, as ho could not possibly turn out the OFFICIAL RED TAPE. Making ■ Live Man Prove H# Wa Alee Alive Last Month. It would be very generally admit ted in ordinary business circles tha if a man is living at the age of fift; years he has been alive in any on of the fifty years preceding. This however, would not be the case h the auditing department of certan government bureaus. There mus be evidence of the man having beei alive, for example, on his fortietl birthday. The point is made plai; by Sir John Adye in his “Recollec tions of a Military Life:” \It is sometimes supposed tha red tape is peculiar to official de partments at home, but that is ai error. There are large consign ments of it sent to India, and I wil give an instance. One day at Simb an old artillery officer called on m< and requested me to give him a cer tifiente of his being alive, ns tin auditor refused to give him his pa] without it. “He seemed to be well and lively and I therefore complied at once As his visit was in August, I datec the certificate accordingly. He sat do'va and enjoyed himself till the last morsel of food had vanished arid there wasn’t n drop of liquor 1 ,t Then he arose and, turning to his host and hostess, said, “Now, then, out you go, and be quick about it.” Most piteously did Adam and Eve beg at least for time, even remind ing him that he had partaken of their bread. All in vain. Thus it was that our first parents were driven out of Eden. DO YOU Want a Home? I have some choice lots and can build you a home for any price. Cape Cod and Cranberries. To see to the best advantage the preliminaries of cranberry sauce, says a Christian Herald writer, we must visit Cape Cod, that elongated bit of land 3vhereby the state of Massachusetts extends a crooked and beckoning finger into the At lantic. Here within a radius of an hour’s ride of historic old Plymouth, where the pilgrims landed, is the greatest of all cranberry districts. The whole countryside would not be alive in July. “This opened out a new aspect ol | the case, hut after considi-ration 1| certified that to the best of my be i lief he xvns living the previous ! month. Sir John Adye had an inter view with the royal visitor one even | ing at a large gathering. The con | versation was through the Persiar interpreter. “Looking aboiit the room am: seeing a general officer at some di- tunco, the shah inquired, ‘Who is that great man in a red coat?’ I re plied that it was Sir Edward Black ett, high sheriff of the county. Per haps that did not convey much tc his mind, so I said to the inter preter, ‘Tell the shah that five and thirty years ago Sir Edward was ir the Crimean war and one day n j shot came and took off his leg.’ Tht : shah threw up^ his hands and was | much ini pressed,'\'but presently the interproti-r said that his majest] could not understand it, as the slier- ! if! hud two legs now. ‘That is quite correct,’ I observed, ffnit tell the shah that one of them is made of wood.’ ” English Words. There are now 400,000 words in the English dictionary, exclusive of I foreign languages. Back three ccn- I turies Shakespeare carried about in | his head five times as many words as the dictionary then contained; to day it has a hundred words for ev ery one which a good writer will use. The great gains in the number of words recorded within the last fifty years have, of course, come from a minute raking over of all ac cessible English documents and from special branches of human la bor, particularly the sciences, in of anything in the house line CHARLES H.
