But friends of animals have special reasons for mourning the departure of this be loved writer, or rather for rejoicing in the memory of the generous life which he lived. He was an arch foe to vivi section. So extremely sensitive were his feelings upon this subject that he did not care whether human life might be benefitted by the tortures of the vi- visector; it was enough for him to know that the animal suffered intense pain. That he knew men and some thing of dogs is shown by his saying: “ If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous he will not bite you. This the principal difference be tween a dog and a man. ” —“ Our Dumb Animals.” International Flying Contest on Long Island The governors of the Aero Club of America have selected Long Island as the place for the great international aviation meeting in the week of Oct. 22 next for the flying championship of the world. Whether the place would, be Belmont Park, the Motor Parkway or Hempstead Plains has not been de cided. The meeting had been bid for by Washington and Baltimore in conjunc> tion and by St. Louie, Indianapolis, Los Angeles and Seattle. Every place offered big prize money. In one in stance $150,000 was offered. The governors said they selected Long Isl and because it was handy not only to New York but to the other large centres Interested; also because the transpor tation facilities were excellent, and ■till further for the reason that the Weather Bureau showed the average wind on Long Island at the end of Oc tober had not exceeded ten miles an hour in the last fifteen years. and creditors of said Louisa : ________________________ ________ C.
