The party was now reduced to twenty dogs. Many fell from weak ness and were devoured by the hungry survivors In the pack. W ithin 100 miles of the goal the icefield became heavier, the obstacles greatef, hut there were no deep rifts. The party saw no sign either of lAnd or of a n open polar s e a ; only ice, ice, ice everywhere. The tem p e rature was seldom above fifty degrees below zero. The actual Pole was reached on April 21. Most careful observations were taken. Nothing was to be seen but the Il lim itable fields of Ice— no evidence of land, or life, or w a ter. The party rem ained thirty-six hours taking observations at the Pole. On the return trip the expedition was reduced to half rations and only two faithful Eskimos survived. All the ammunition was gone before the Greenland shores were reached May 21, 1909. A Citizen of Brooklyn. Brooklyn, N. Y.— Dr. Frederick A. Cook has taken part in half a dozen notable exploring expeditions in his life time, in Arctic and A n tarctic re gions, and in m o u n ta in climbing. In this last his greatest feat was the ascent of Mount McKinley, in Alaska, in 1906, after unsuccessful attem p ts in 1903 by himself, and before that by several geographical societies. From his boyhood Dr. Cook has been interested in scientific achieve ments. He was born at Callicoon Depot, Sullivan County, New York, June 10, 1865, th e son of Dr. Theo dore Albert Cook— the family 'name was originally Koch, but was changed after coming to this country. He r e ceived his education in the public schools of Brooklyn and in Callicoon, and was graduated in medicine from the University of New York City in 1890. In 1892 be m arried Mary tlon th a t ever penetrated northern latitudes, could only get within on€ hundred miles pf the earth 's apex# I canhot conceive how Cook has done it on his nerve, so to speak. How could he persuade the natives to go with him as carriers, for carriers he m u st have had cr starve? Food and fuel sufficient to last for m o n ths must have been taken along, and how and w h e re would he get the funds to buy the food or the men and dogs to car ry It?” DOW IE’S SUCCESSOR JAILED. Some one wiped the scald with a towel, pulling the entire skin off. We took her to a doctor. He tended her a week and gave me some stuff to put on. But it all festered and I thought the baby was disfigured for life. I used about three boxes of Cuticura Ointment and it was wonderful how it healed. In about five weeks it was better and there wasn’t a mark to tell where the scald had been. Her skin is just like velvet. CONFESSIONS OF A CLOWN. At Last, There is on Sale a Book Brimful of American Humor. Any bookseller will tell you th a t the constant quest of his customers is for \a book which will make me laugh.” The bookman is compelled to reply that the race of American hum o rists has run out and comic lit erature is scarcer than funny plays. A wide sale is therefore predicted for the “Memoirs of Dan Rice,” the Clown of Our Daddies, w ritten by M aria W ard Brown, a book guaran teed to make you roar with laughter. The author presents to the public a volume of the great jester’s most pungent jokes, comic harangues, caustic hits upon men and m anners, lectures, anecdotes, sketches of ad venture, original songs and poetical effusions; wise and witty, serious, satirical, and sentim e n ta l sayings of the sawdust arena of other days. Old Dan Rice, as proprietor of the famous “One Horse Show,” was more of a national character than Artemus W ard, and this volume contains the hum o r which made the nation laugh even while the great Civil W ar raged. Lerwick, Shetland Islands.— Dr. Cook Bays that the most im p o rtant diecovery made in his journey of more than 200 miles farther north than any human has ever gone before Is a new strip of land more than 30,- 000 square miles in extent, inhabited by polar animals and game of consid erable variety. Before reaching the Pole Dr. Cook suffered almost killing hardships from hunger and cold. — F rom Eskimos who accompanied the explorer it was learned th a t the party lived upon Immense catches of bear m eat which resulted from the great h u n t of Eskimos on the Green land shore just before Cook’s party arrived at Annootok. L a rge quantities of these stores w ere laid at a point 700 miles from the Pole. During the long w inter night sleds were prepared, equipm ent and instrum e n ts packed for the jour ney across the ice packs, which was to begin at least a month before the first dawn of light in the spring of 1908. t The actual start by Dr. Cook, ac companied by ten Eskim o s on a dozen heavily laden sledges, drawn by over a hundred dogs, was m ade on jSbruai;y 19. In the next four weeks nearly 200 m iles was accomplished. Num erous m u sk oxen, several bear and hare were killed and eaten during this Journey. The cold was frightful. The m ercury fell at times to m o re than eighty degrees below zero. More than twenty dogs died from the exposure, and four of the Eskimos deserted and turned back, taking two of the sleds and some of the supplies w ith them . In two more weeks Dr. Cook and the faithful followers left him say th a t they reached the latitude of 84 deg. 17 sec., longitude 86 deg. 36 sec. That word which is able to make flesh of abstract material comes seldom from the mouth of the scientist, however fine and true be his knowledge, potent his voice or sturdy his faith. What a monstrosity indeed was that Frankenstein, man created by the hand of man to scare the public of a century ago! Nor could ever a workman, however cu rious his art, make of any dry bones a Zagloba. This it is then which marks George Meredith as unique among artists: that being first a critic of man, he is in a secondary degree, and yet in a degree extraordinary, a creator of man.— Atlantic Monthly.
