Telephone, 48 Frcepot Friday, April 5, 1907 Published tvery Friday at FREEPORT, LONG ISLAND, N. $1.50 PFR ANNUM IN ADVANCE Single Copies Five Cents A w o r d o f T h a n k s During the last four years, since Smith Cox was by trickery turned out of the office of Supervisor, the Review has been fighting for his return, know ing him to be an honest, capable officer and believing him to be the best Su pervisor the town ever had. During these years bis enemy, turned away from the public crib, has been assailing him through press and court, and it has been the duty as well as the pleasure of the Review to show the absolute falsity of the trumped-up charges and still more fiendish insinu ations made against Mr. Cox. There were tim es when we seemed to have an up-hill fight, the other papers of the town leaving us to fight alone until re cently, when the Hempstead Republi can had also helped expose the trickery of Mr. Cox’s assailant. The result Tuesday, when Mr. Cox was given a plurality of 376 votes in the village of Frcjport alone, makes us feel the deep significance of our work, and we thank our readers who brought about this result. We know Mr. Cox to be honest and it was w ith a great deal of pride that we noted the expression of confidence in our judgment as given by the vot ers. Smith F. Pearsall, Editor. Hon. George should remember, that people don’t take much stock in his mud slinging. With all the false, malicious slander in the Observer last week, Smith Cox IS Supervisor. The Independence League vote WAS a surprise. W ith all the money they were spending for printing, etc., they only polled about 600 votes. mains that a dozen tickets in the field would have rrade nd difference in the result in the town. The “ c itizen’s ” ticket yulied about 250 votes and the Independence League about 600 votes, but as Mr. Cox’s plurality over Mr. Felton on the Democratic ticket was over 000 he has a m ajority of nearly a hundred over all the other candidates combined. Announcement made th a t it is the intention of Mr. and Mfs. Daniel S. W illmarth to resign, respectively as keeper and matron of the Alms House, May 1st, will be learned with regret by many who have visited and have had official and social relations w ith them. Mr. W illmarth has deemed his resignation necessary on account of serious illness some months past. Therefore, feeling that a rest at this time will be of benefit to him, he will reside at Merrick, where he recently bought a place, to enjoy^life free from the responsibilities of official duties. The Observer’s prognostication of the election results reminds one of a Brooklyn Eagle postal card canvass. A number of men tam e out from H e city on Election Day, with the evident intention of selling their votes if any one wanted to buy them, judging from their actions. One of them tried to vote at Rockv illv Centre, hut fled when challenged. He was later ar rested and locked up. There being a large company of these men the v illage authorities to prevent trouble called out the fire departm ent and gave the unwelcome visitors their choice of g e t ting out of town or taking a w etting from the fire hose, and they chose the latter course. The man arrested was hailed out by his “ b rother” on pay ment of $250 cash bail. At Hemp stead the men were also ordered out of the village by Sheriff Gidersleeve.
