DT T.ESTER KETCIIT1M. , ALD-FACED BILL (tnm b lcJ, almost recovered himself, then stood stockstill, (tim ing bis head, looked appealingly into his master's eyes. . “ TVhat’g th ’ mat- v teb, Bill?\ asked Sam. \C a sta shoe? {Bested *| ye hnin’t,\ bo continued, ■Iter dismounting nud examining the foot tho horso held up for iuspection, \O u g h t 't ' t o h a d yo fixed up moro'n two weeks hnoU, oi' hois.” Ho took o n th isk n if o —a sort of pocket black smith and oaroonter-shup— loftly ro- moved tho rest of the nails by wliiffh the shoe hung to tho hoof, put tho aboe in his pocket, then sto o l up and scratched hia head. This was serious business. Here bo vras, over sixty miles away from homo (and in n hurry to get there), in n sparsely settled portion of tho oouu- try, and without tbe s lightest 'idea of where or how he was going to find a place where be m ight Tgot that shoo reset. TruA, ho,ha.I no business rid ing nn anim a l that required the ser vices of a f a rrier; but Bfll was not a native horse, aud, having worn shoes wbeu Sam flrat got him, ho had bcon kept shod over since. I t waa twenty odd milos back to Taborville, whence Bam had started that morning, aud ha disliked tho idea of returning thnt distanoe just to have a shoe s e t ; so, after some min utes’ hesitation ho decided to go •bead and trust to Inok; nnd after walking abont three miles (a painful task for a (cowboy), ho “ mol up with” • man traveling in tho other direc tion, who, much to his relief, told him th a t there was a cross roads just ahead in tho tim ber, with a store aud a blacksmith shop situated oloso by. Sam thanked him and passed on, but preaeutly, much to his surpriso, the strauger turned aud gallopod back to him. \ I thought I'd toll ye,” ho said, \bein' as yo'ro a straugeli, th 't ye’d' best not dally 'raonud that place noun —an* d o n 't driuk nothin'. I don't think I'll dally nono whatevah.\ Then Ham aud the frioudly s tr in g e r parted, and Ham foand his way to tha crossroads. The blaoksmith was at work when ho Name along, bnt assured him ho would attend to Bill \in a jiffy.\ Four or five men wero loafing about tho placo, aud they at oujo proceeded to take note of, and comment upon, Bill's good points—a fact that Ham would nave J u ly appreciated hod lie beeu able to oonviuco himself t h a t their at tentions were altogether disinterest ed. Aa it waa, however, he viewod With suspicion all their overtures to ward striking np an acquaintance, and found it difficult to treat them with the civility that Hontliwestern courtesy demands—albeit they were, to all a p pearances, just as honorablo and np- right oitixen* as himself. In fact, they looked just like the average frontiers man whose time, for tho moment, bangs heavily on his hands, and but for the warning of tho friendly s traug er, Sam Htires would doubtless havo \mixed free\ with them. As it was, even, he inadverteoly adm itted that he was going to El Rio, and was iu a hurry to get th e r e ; b ut ho sensibly re fused all invitatiou* to \likkcr up,\ \GoVe said the woman, with an ] strong last winteb, w'en I was ovnh im p a tient gesture,“ I m ight’s’ knowed ye wouldn’t say so, cf yo was. O nly, git a move on.” Ham lost no tune m seeing that Bill was properly \fixed aud, getting started, he took tho stfnugo little woman’s advice and turned Coward Amity Forks, thereby preserving, no doubt, a whole skin. Ho asked him- F e l f , many times, why tho woman should have taken the trouble to warn him, bnt was tumble to find any rea son tor it. As a m atter of fact, the woman her self could have given no reason be yond that essentially feuiiniuo \b e cause.\ Tbo fflco of Ned Flynn haunted Sam. Why, it is impossible to say, for Sam Htires, like the rest of his family, was not all imaginative. There was noth ing rem arkable about tho face of Flynn, tho outlaw, excepting th a t it belied the c h a racter of its owner, berng a square, houost face, with tw o 'c le a r, honest blue eyes, whilo Flyjiti—well, everybody withiii a hundre/f miles of the lino knew what he was. Neverthe less, that face bothered Ham all the way home and for two or three days afterward, and ho could think of no roasou for its coustaufc appearance be fore his mental vision until, ono after- noon shortly after his arrival home, he started out for thtoJ^uston place to seo Mat. Then, as ho foNlod a creek near tho Huston ranch, ho remom- bored the man he had met there ono time, who, ho had been told after his arrival at tho house, was H a rry Arm strong, his much-heard-of but never- before-seen rival for Mat’s affections. And ho rem embered now that tho si ranger’s face was tho face o t Ned Flypn, outlaw and ‘‘rustler.” After mitkiug this s ta rtling discovery he rode more slowly, in order to re cover his m ental equilibrium. lie was in doubt how to net in the matter, for he was by no means absolutely certain tbat he was correct, and he knew that to tell Mat of his discovery and then find th a t ho was mistaken, would jeopardize, if not ruin, bis own chances with her. Wherefore, ho re solved to proceed with caution, aud to assure himself that he was right be fore going ahead. \Hay B a rt,\ ho asked, in a confi- (lontil tone, of M at’s brother, who rodo a mile or two with him o q his home ward way Into th a t night, \who’s this yere man Armstrong, anyways?\ Bart Huston laughed. “ Git tin* scairtof ’im, Ham? Didn’t s’poso ho was worry in’ ye at all, I sho’ d idn’t.” \Oh I don’t car’ p’tic’Jar,\ said Haoi, hastily, with a gesture of clopro- ration. \O h ’y, I ’m jus’ sort o’ c u r’us ’bout ’iin, t h a t’s a ll.\ \Wa-nl fart K T il'no’a I Know much about t h ’duck,\ confessed Bart. \Seen ’im oncet, didu’t yo? Aud he said nothing morp to Bart on the subjoct, but cer tainly \kep’ a-thiulcin’ a lot,” as he would havo expressed it. Ho must make sure t h a t his surmiso was cor rect, and thou—well, Mr. Armstrou or Flynn, or whatever his would not only a *. ruuniug. v*O.00, elude one Ok . placo at tho ena..**, ® P O r f Bnt before Sam ^ * out the best plan for naan of \Arm strong’s” identity with Flynn, ho learno 1 tlyit that gentleman was expected, iu a few days, on a visit to M a t; and this information, volun teered by Bart, whom he mot ou the rnuge, decided Sam —who had been at tho point of deciding for about two years—on a courso of action, and tho very next day ho rodo over to see Mat. As he ro le up to tho house, ho no- tioed that it looked singularly quiot, and (so timid was ho by this time) he almost hoped the \folks” wero all away, aud that ho could again post- pouo asking Mat tho question ho ha 1 so loug beeu wanting, yet fearing, to ask. But Mat herself met him at tho door. “ W’y, howdy, Ham !’’ sho ejaculated. \ I ’m right glad t ’ seo ye! Didn't kuow, f’r sho’, b u t what ’twos some oue A-comtn’ t ’ c a rry me off!\ \ I ’ve a right good notion t’ do it,\ said Sam, with what he considered r e markable audacity — aud then he failed to follow up this opening, but ashed: \Be yo all alone. But tho girl nodded her head affirmatively, and b it a coiner of the handkerchief she held to her eyes. — \t~ CJltTl’t b’ttrvo it, M a t—T sho' said poor Ham, plaintively. Lc’ me think.” So engrossed were they that they had not heard the sound of galloping hoofs, auJ both were startled when some oue reined up suddenly, almost in front of them, au.l cried, hoarsely: \G o od God ! Mat, where can I hide?\ \N e d F lynn!\ ejaculated Sam, starting to his feet dazedly. \H u rry !\ shrieked tho girl, as tho mau, pale, bareheaded and disheveled, threw himself from hisdroopinghor.se and staggered toward them. One side of his face und neck was coverod with blood. Tho girl sprang forward and threw her arm s about him. \W h a t is it, Harry? W hat is it?\ \N o thing,\ said the man, grim ly— \only they’ve sent out three posses after me, and I'm caught. There’s a lot of ’em just behind. If 1 could get over tho Two-Mile—\ Haiu started forward. \Haow fur b’hind arc they?” ho asked, in a q u e e r voice. \B ig h t on ray heels,” replied tho other man, with tho calmness of de spair. He sat with his head buried iu his wife’s lap, and did not look up, seeming to care not at all what hap pened next. Then Ham did something tlmt su r prised himself \G it inside, you two !\ ho said, roughly, aud tossed his hat to Flyun. Theu ho rau aud leaped into tho saddle the other man had just left, jammed his spurs into tho weary horse’s flanks, nnd, with a wave of tho hand, was olT toward tho hills-— and not a quarter of a mile behind him, wbeu ho struck tho road, wero a half dozen hors* men. They caught sight, of him crossing tho road ahead, nml, with loud yells, raced after lii in. Ham knew that tho horso ho rodo could not last long, but ho still had time to think of what ho had done, aud what would bo done to him. IIo know what geuerally happened to p e r sons who aided tho oscapo of meu like F lynn—but ho reflected, grimly, th a t ho had h is revolver on, and they should never hang him, at least. B u t—why had ho dono it? Ho did not feel sorry, really, but ho could not comprehend his own action. \P i n g ! ” They were shooting nt him uow, and tho bullets wero llying uncomfortably close. If he could only reach tlio timber 1 Ho glanced back, nud it gave him u pang to see how rapidly they wero gaining upon him. His horso stumbled, fell, nnd threw h i m ; but ho was back in tho saddle in a moment and urging tho poor crea ture ou. Again ho looked back. Oue of bis pursuers suddenly halted his horse, dismounted, and, with his kneo for a rest, began pumping lead aftor tho fugitive. Quo— tw o — throo shots missed him. lie hoped ho was draw ing out of range. Then— \W h a t’s th ’ m atter wi’ that?\ asked tho mau who had dismounted, as ho Sam’s cousin, Will Htires. \Through th’ back, hey?” Aud ho turned tho body over. \Slick an'—good heav ens ! It’s Ham!
