AGNES' CHURCH IN ROCKVILLE CENTRE, PERSONAL ATTENDANT OF CARDINAL MUNDELEIN Rockville Centre, March 24. -Catholic minds hereabouts were centered today in the ceremonial at Rome in which Archbishop Mundelein of Chicago was proclaimed cardinal. Village interest in the elevation of the Chicago prelate was keen because by the Archbishop's side during the whole impressive observance stood Rt. Rev. Peter Quealy, rector of St. Agnes Roman Catholi¢ Church, this village. Monsignor Quealy, together with Rt. Rev, Mons, Shield of ? Chicago, personal secretary of \Archbishop Mundelein, were the only Americans in the reti- nue of the newly created Prince of the church, They assisted in keeping with the office of Monsignor, and were chief participants with the prelate in the bestowal of the great honor. Monsignor Quealy has lately been made a domestic prelate. Beside the part which St. Agnes' pastor had in the cere- monial today, Catholics in this neighborhood found joy in the occasion because a sister of the RT. REV. PETER QUEALY des in e Centre. She of Rockville Centre is Mrs. T. C. Eppig of Rockville Centre and one of the most prominent members of the local Catho- lic parish, 'The eardinal-archbishop has another sister, Mrs. A. B. Hull of Forest Hills, Besides these little sentiments, there was joy in the minds of Rockville Centre Catholics because, almost the last Sunday be- fore he sailed for Rome, with Father Quealy, his life long friend and Father Shields, his personal secretary, the Chicago prelate said mass in St. Agnes Church. Next, came to the magic words over the diamond tipped wires of the Associated Press telling publicly what was some time contemplated-and it was indeed, practically from this little village that Archbishop Mundelein went to receive the high honors of his church. ( The Cardinal, while not Long Island born, has deep interest in Long Island, particularly in Rockville Centre. Monsignor Quealy and himself have long been friends. The advance of the one to the rank of domestic prelate and of the other to the higher place were 'companion part in the honors of the Holy Father and the two made the plans hurriedly, as they needed to, to be in Rome today. And there will be interest in the public consistory Thursday, too, at which the prelate, together with Archbishop Hayes of New York will formally receive from Pope Pius the red hats which de- note their elevation to the cardinalate. The Basilica of St. Peter's, the most imposing shrine in all Christendom, is being made ready for this and it is said in the news stories from Rome that no Ameri- can who cares to see the ceremonial will be turned away. Patrick myes, Archbishop of New York, and Mgt. George W. Mundelein, J. K P1 Archbishop of Chicago, were made Cardinals of the Roman Catho- lis Church at a secret consistory held this morning in the historie hall of consistory at the Vatican, The ceremony, carried ont im conformity with centu.ies-old ritual, was performed in majestic solemnity amid a sett'sg of colorful splendor. The two American prelates thus raised to the dignity of princes of the church were not present, but awaited notification of their elevation at their respective temporary places of residence in Rome, in accordance with custom. Cardinal Hayes received the \Big- lietto\ as the notification is called, at the American College, and Cardinal Mundelein at the College of Propaganda. The Consistory-was participated in by all the Cardinals resi- dent in Rome, who assembled in the Hall of Consistory at about 10 o'clock. The hall was a dazzling mass of color. The striking violet robes of the Cardinals, hanging to the ground in graceful folds, mingled with the purple of the Monsignors of the Papal household. Swiss Guards in their multi-colored medieval uniforms and bearing halberds; Papal gendarmes, officers of the Vatican's armed forces and numerous functionaries in historic garb added to the picturesqueness of the scene.
