SKYROCKET PLANS -- Everybody knows how a skyrocket goes bagg-oooh! And then it is all over. Some good- propositions are ~ like that. It was only a little while ago that the, Freeport Chamber of Commerce came forward with one of the best suggestions for the traffic problem on Main street that has yet been heard. It created a lot of fav- orable comment and people pictured the Chamber as coming out of a long sleep and blossoming into an active life, and then like the skyrocket, after the explosion there was nothing but the calm of the night and the twink- ling Stars. ~ Widening Main street has got to be accainplished some day. Widening has got to come some time: and there are other civic prob- lems) that are important and should be followed up and hammered home once they are broached. , An- organization contes \into fife: an a wave of enthusiasm and then after a few nourishing meetings it dies from starvation, The books show a healthy membership but the meetings reveal only the faithful few that come out at every call. In this particular instance, \¢yes because of having ening of Main street, it is the Only something together, and Community feasible idea that has come out of the many on the same problem. a big idea and it was launched in the presence of a baker's dozen. Since then perhaps the reason no more has been heard of it because of the fact that npt even the baker's dozen have comeout to meetings. 'The president and the officers of civic bodies are elected by the mem- bers and are worthy of their support all through the year. What is more 1 discouragiqg fora president to arrive at a meeting and not find a quoruin present? It must take the heart oft of the most enthusiastic, and. even though they are filled with good ideas fay the betterment of. their associa- tion or the betterment of their vib lage they must feel that it is a waste -of breath -to try. and-get-rid of ther. \ >In the matter of <the Freeport Chamber of Commerce; if there «is, one organization -in the village that can help the 'business men and the conditions -of the business section it is that 'self same body.\ It aught to he used for no other purpase for once politics creeps ig, or selfish motives get a hold, the worth of the organiza- tion is Tess than the dust, At the present time the Freeport Chamber of Comitmerce should be the most active organization in Freeport - because there are many things of in- terest to the business tien beside the widening of Main street, ; The\ Civic Associations are on the map and functioning ud phere is an. opportunity of having thie Chatber af Commerce lead theia all It should, its rightful place is at the head of-all cific bodies and thingy Tikethe tieg> lécled gample lights on Merrick road that have been'thore over a yoar with. widening of streets, and. many, other thitigs that will better the business section should be coming up at every meeting, and between mectings and complished. & Enough of thew skyrocket ideas that splitter and, then dis wut. With the plans for raising additional funds beitig aided by the civic associations the completion of the memorial is in the hands of the people themselves, the «people who 'can aid substantially to build it and the people who are go- ing to use it, They ought not to con- sider the cost in dollars and cents for «iter all, is there enough money in the world to pay for one Freeport life that has been sacrificed on the battle field? The people are patriotic, and the people are going to finish the library. Mistakes have been made, they will be forgotten and hands will grip all - around for who is there who can find room in his heart to allow a personal feeling to act as a barrier against honoring the glorious dead. The buddies brothers and parents of those who died must unite in show- ing the worl carved the glorious immortal names of her sons and: daughters in letters of everlasting endurance that will glitter like the purest gold for all time to, come. he men and women who are mem- bers of the civic associations have the interest of the service men at heart, Their love for the soldier and sailor is genuine. Their response to the appeals for cigarettes has always been generous and they have said that as soon as the memorial to the dead is finishd_then will they bend their , unifed efforts jo getting a suitable place for the boys who came back, This policy can receive nothing but the warmest support from everyone. It is not conceivable that minds are narrow enough to place any obstacles in the way of finishing the. library now and then getting the veterans a home. - It is time that Freeport as Freeport ! did sorhething that smacked df co- operation and after it is over a united Freeport will stand erect and smile at ofie another with a new look in Spirit that long expected child, will be born. Watch the crew of an cight cared shell at Vale. Every back bends as one, every oar dips and feathers at the samég time, every conceivable ounce of strength in the boat is con- centrated and expended all at the same moment, and it is a beautiful sight. There is ,no room here but: for Americans, and Americans are the sort who will get together and aid in finishing_ the. library. - One resident of the village sails for Europe this week. According to his friends he has said that he will be glad to get out of this -- country and back to Germany. Without being cold blood- ed, it is hoped by many that he never comes. back here again. There is no- room for him here. .
