Gallons of steaming glam chowder and huge quantities of savory clam pie made from secret recipes handed down from generation to generation disappeared at Cap'n Abe Smith's traditional birthday party in the 100-year-old oy- ster house on Hanse avenue, Freeport, Saturday afternoon. It was Cap'n Abe's eighty-first anniversary, but he personally took a hand in the cooking, at which he received help from his \youngster Cap'n Decker Smith, over 60, and a group of his cronies, all over 80. Cap'n Abe received many presents and the women folk of the old timers present baked cakes and other delica- cles that disappeared as quickly as the main dishes. The tables were covered with old-fashioned checkered table cloths and the floor with glis- tening, white sea sand, as yielding to the feet as the finest Persian rug. The pot- bellied old stove, around which the old timers gather for their daily debates during the long winter afternoons, gave off a cheery warmth. The patriarch of the gath- ering was Furman Seaman, who observed his ninety-first birthday St. Valentine's day.
