Long Beach has flashed impres- sive form at times this year but at no time has been as consistent as the defending Nassau county champions, who possess not only speed but plenty of court craft and a mixture of veterans and youth for a balanced lineup. 3rd Place Battle As for the remainder of the teams it looks as though the Rock- ville Centre Alumni and the Bell- more club will battle it out for third place honors with the Mal- verne Fraternity, Gibson Athletic club, Valley Stream Athletic club and the Hempstead Fraternity for the second division. On Northside of the- island | the race has practically settled down to a private duel between the Mineola Athletic association and the Roslyn Caseys, as the re- sult of the recent defeats suffered by the St. Dominic's Alumni of Oyster Bay and the Tally-Ho club of Westbury, defendi 1 champions. The Roslyn and Mineola teams, barring unforeseen upsets, will battle for the title at the Mineola high court a week from Wednes- day night for both teams have jst about completed the remainder of their schedule, Mineola, which won the title for three seasons prior to last year when it lost in a round robin play- off with Oyster Bay and Tally-Ho is a slight favorite to win because of the fact that it will be playing at home. In a previous meeting at the Roslyn high gym Mineola scored a decisive victory. Sirce that time, however, the C3unty Seaters have been upset by the St. Dominic's Alumni club, which has strength- ened the hopes of the Hilltoppers. } The two clubs are natural rivals for most of the players who now wear the Roslyn Casey uniforms played for the Oyster Bay club a year ago when a triple-tie oc- curred. Tally-Ho and St. Dominic's are scheduled to battle all the way to the tape for third place honors with the laurels about evenly di- vided. | LEGIONETTES TRAVEL Freeport 19-17; Seek 2nd Win Tonight _o AAq For RETORN contest > m E seuss Williston Girls _TOPP1G| roan |A Fees oe 8 0B (Pe (iE 26-19 WI Sea Side Team Topped 33- 24, Red Devils Rout New Jersey Quintet Demerest held the O'Donovan outfit in check in the first quarter to trail by 5-4 after eight minutes, never in doubt. The accurate passing and shooting of the con- ference five had Demerest be- wildered in the second canto when Moran and Samet led a drive that brought the count to 17-4 shortly before the intermission. . Red Devils Use Subs Using frequent substitutions In the last half, Freeport was con- tent to hold its lead and staved off every Demerest rally with heads- up defensive play. Captain Jack Moran was the backbone of a smooth zone defense and also chalked up 13 points for scoring honors. Reilly and Samet tossed in eight points each to tie for the runner-up slot. Long Beach, annually one of the strongest quintets on the south shore, put up a stubborn battle against a well-balanced St. Simon Stock five before dropping a 33-24 decision. The 51135” and White cagers drew w four points of the pneeupmten in the last period when Bob Gersten paced a quick-breaking attack, but lost out in the closing minutes. The Walshmen dropped behind by 5-0 in the first two minutes, but quickly recovered from their stage fright to click off ten straight points in their best showing of the game. George Lay led the spurt with two baskets and a foul shot. However, the Saints came back with a rally of their own to take a 12-10 lead, holding the advan- tage at halftime as McDonald of the losers and Bolton of St. Simon matched baskets in a hectic final minute. Rosenbaum, six foot six center of the Bronx combination, spelled defeat for the invaders in the third quarter when he used his height to set up plays with Jimmy Kier- nan on the scoring end. The Long Beach zone defense fell apart in a futile attempt to get the ball from Rosenbaum, leaving Kiernan free for pop shots which he cashed in on with uncanny accuracy. Trailing by 25-14 as the teams went into the last quarter, Long Beach came to life under the leadership of diminutive Bob Gersten, who scored eight points in five minutes as the Beachers nar- rowed the gap to 28-24. When baum was ejected on fouls the chances of the Beachers seemed good, but they wilted un- der the strain and St. Simon scored five more points.
