© CLERGYMEN OF HOLLAND PROTEST AGAINST OLYMPICS! ® SEVEN METERS [fine Racé: Lou 1, Fabe, 0 OF AMSTERDAM IN VIGOROUS REPORT Fondemn 1928 Event as \Op- posed to the Principles ‘ of God\ Amsterdam, Holland, April 14 »-(AP) -Hostility to the forth- poming Olympic games here has arisen in Dutch religious circles and a report on the subject by peven - Amsterdam - clergymen has been made public. The report, adopted at a recent EWUM of the council of the Dutch efromed Church of Amsterdam hich must not be confused with the tter known and older Dutch Re- formed (Herformde) church, says: \Taking all things into considera- Hon there appears to us to be ample gamma-a for decisively opposing e forthcoming Olympic games. Here yverything is opposed to the principle F loving God above all else and lov- | # one's neighbor as one's self. The trongest being is here the most ex- Ited and is raised to the place which o1 alone should occupy. It, therefore, ippears to us to be desirable that the church councils should, before the spening of the Olympic games, ad- fires sto the congregations from the puipits a word of warning and ad- monition. In this connection it also Appears to be desirable to entrust to e servants of God the task of draft- # appeal for submission to, and ap- proval of, the church council.\ Yanks Win Again The box score: Yankees Combs, ef. That \if\ by the way is used very advisedly as there seem to be so many rival promoters in the offing, this year, that it does not seem likely that all can go through with their plans and make a success of them, despite the enthusiasm the local folks have shown for the sport. ¢\ Sam - Turner, - working > under Lieutenant ~Graves, - nt Mitchel field, will, of course, bring in the customers in the usual style, to see the bouts at the soldiers' arena, . 'There is a faithful 800 which show up at every fight and, so far this season, the average, even indoors, has been close to the 1,000 mark for all the battles. The customers know that when they go to the Mitchel field fights, they will- see FIGHTS, not waltzes. And fights is what the boys want to see, whether they be hardboiled privates from the field, or the Westbury millionaires. BIGGER AND BETTER FIGHTS? Long Beach arena will get going during the early part of June and while the matchmaker haf not yet been definitely selected the bouts will probably be of higher quality than last year to meet the stiff competition. Despite persistent rumors that the Oceanside arena, which only opened last summer, would remain closed this season, it has -been~_ learned that it will in all likelinood be under new management and will put on fights again. Last year the Oceanside arena was not & great financial success. AND NOW A NEW ONE Now we have word of a new \bull ring\ for Nassau county and that the Mineola Pair Grounds have been leased for the site. Jesse Ryerson, former Hempstead sporting goods store owner, and Steve Weber, manager of Sergeant Sammy Baker, premier welterweight title contender, are associated with New York interests in the promo- tion of the Pair Grounds arena. This scheme, if it is all that it is cracked up to be, seems to be the goods and should give the boys who like to see clever boxing something for their money, Especially if the New York interests, who are connected with the boxing gamg in a journalistic way, according to our unreliable informant, materialize heavily, THE SOLDIERS CARRY ON In the meantime, of all the arenas, the soldiers are going ahead by themselves, not caring much who else comes into the business, knowing that as long as they put on the scraps, there won't be any need to take up a collection at the end of the season. We confess that we are interested in the competitive angle, how- ever, and wish 'em all the best of luck. If they all do as well as Sergeant Turner, the commuters will be run ragged trying to all the attractions. gaged trying to go to < Ball ~ BROWNS SHOWING UP WELL; LEVE HOME RS IN SANE .|Yanks-Athletics Account for Six; Todt Hits Two - at Boston (By The Associated Press) Followers of the St. Louis Browns today perceived a visible effect in the recent general housecleaning ordered by Phil Ball on the strength of three consecutive victories over the De- troit Tigers. Merrick Cards to Play Freeport A. C. In Opener Sunday The Freeport A. C. will travel to Merrick this Sunday and play toe Merrick Cardinals. This year Freeport has Bedell, a mew first baseman, while Combs and Harrington show up as promising ma- terial ag fielders. With men like A. Chuisano, Burdett, Barbato, P. Chul- sano, H. Smith and Austin back in the line-up, the team hopes to make up for the five defeats of last season. Minevia Soccer Opens Season Mineola soccer team at home this Sunday, will play the much heralded Bay Ridge soccer team in the first! round of the La Sultanna Cup at Jericho Turnpike and Mineola boule vard grounds. A good game is an- ticipated as both teams will be out at full strength and also this being a knockout competition, the loser trk ing no further part in the compe- tition, makes the event more inter- esting.
