STEEL MAGNATE Elbert H. Gary JUDGE H. CARY DIES SUOOENU Bare Announcement of Demise Given Out at Fifth Avenue Home New York, Aug. 15.-(AP)- Elbert H. Gary, chairman of the board of the United States Steel C i died at his home at 4 o'clock this morning. Reports of Mr. Gary's death fit began to circulate in the Wall Street district in the middle of the morning Confirmation was not immediateiy available at the offices of the United States Steel Corporation but when reporters went to the Gary home at 1130 Fifth avenue an employe on th: household made the bare announce- ment that Mr. Gary had died at 4 o'clock. He sud all further details would be given out in a statement a' the steel corporation, later. It was stated that the cause of Mr Gary's death was chronic myocarditis. He had been in ill health for about a month, At the offices of the steel coropration the exact time of death was placed at 3:40 o'clock this morn- Ing. Beyond that bare announcement it was said no details would be avail- able until some time during the after- noon. Judge Gary's vast estate at Syosset has long seen famous as one of the real show places on Long Island. His exhibits of fruits and vegetables, too, at the Mincola Pair has for years been one of the outstanding features, always vying with the Pra't estale and the Whitney estate for the very highest honors. Gary won many blue ribbons. Man Barely Escapes Injury When Auto Hits Telephone Pole Clarence P. Kaitenbach of 215 Ocean Parkway, Brooklyn, narrowly escaped injury when the machine which he was driving struck a tele- graph pole at the corner of Merrick road and John street, Lynbrook, about 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon. There are 32 school districts in the town. The total of their valuations is the same as the total assesment of all the property in the town, which is $166,828,567. In dividing the assesment roll, filed at the town clerk's office Saturday, Into school districts the assessors' staff computed the real, personal and special franchise assessments of the districts. The school district valum- Mons were prepared first after the completion of the assesment roll .in order not to delay the districts in determining their school tax rates for the coming year. This number of accidents, according to the police, is compara- tively small, especially when the heavy rains and wet pavements of last night are taken into consideration. He pleaded guilty and was fined $100 by Judge Johnson of Cedarhurst. Sidney W. Van Wort, 36 years old of 340 Putnam avenue, Brooklyn, pleaded gullty to Judge Johnson of Cedarhurst of being a public intoxi- cant. Sentence was suspended. The arrest was made on Merrick Road, Merrick, a' 3:45 o'clock Sunday morn- ing by Patrolman A. M. Gocbel. Bernard H. McNelus, 38 years old of 29 Waverly Place, Oceanside, was arrested on a charge of driving while Intoxicated, the arrest being made by Patrolman Samilian on Merrick road, Baldwin, at 11:15 o%clock Saturday night.
