Supervisors Vote Their Co-operation in Plaax to Conserve Material Residents to Be Asked Also to Save Other Metal , and Fats , for ^' - Industrial Use Co-operation of the Civilian Defense Council of Suffolk County iri f a nation-wide plan to collect ' scrap aluminum , which was requested in a let- ter received from Governor Lehman , chairman of the State Defense council , was pledged by the Board of Supervisors at Riverlead Monday. Following a conference with Coun- ty Judge L. Barron Hill , who is chairman of the Suffolk Civilian De- fense council , Supervisor Perry B- Duryea offered the effecting resolu- tion. A similar resolution for the salvag- ing of fats thx'own away as garbage and for metals discarded by house- wives was passed on the recommenda- tion of Lieut. Col. Charles R. Van. Eetten of Belle Terre. Colonel Van Eetten , who was in charge of U. S. Army salvage opera- tions in Prance during the World war and who later carried out a sim- ilar venture in New York city when thousands of tons of fats and metals wer e reclaimed and xised in industries , had previously appeared before the Civilian D efenise counci l with his pro- posal. , \ The resolution passed by the board authorized Colonel Van Eetten to su- pervise and control the collection and salvage of such scrap and waste ma- terials which can be used for national defense purposes \ except such Dnate- rial as may be designated for col- lection as part of Governor Lehman ' s program. \ Under the plan the several towns will be asked to create depots where the waste materials can be collected, sorted and sliipped to plants which will pro cess it. • Colonel Van Eetten. suggested that money raised from this salvage program be used by the- towns to lower local taxes.
