Coast and Air Def ense of L. I. Much Increased in Size ? Extent While a person in civil life going about his business does not find the countryside bristling wi th military equipment , coast and air defense im- provements and expansion on Long Island show that the War department is alive to the need for protection of this strategic reg ion fronting New York and Connecticut. The Long Island association has prepared a report outlining the de- fense factors , so far as they are dis- closed. * In commenting on the report Henry R. Swartley, Jr., president of the association , said , 'The military and nava l ' d efense of the Long Island reg ion is rapidly being completed to the ultimate detail. We know , too ., that civilian defense in the City of New York and the counties of , Nassau and Suffolk are being equally detailed. \There need be no fear of any lack in total defense nor is there any need for hysterical outcries about Long Island' s defenseless position. As Brig. General John C. McDonnell of Mitchel field recently pointed out , we have a great air defense area that extends out into the Atlantic ocean several hundred miles in a huge sefni- eircle between Newfoundland and Bermuda. No foreign power can penetrate that defense with any suf- ficient number of planes or vessel s to do any material damage to our regi on . \ • A ' summary of the report to the Long Island association submitted by its managing director follows : $ Q, Coast Defense Posts | ^- ¦ : = €> Fort Hamilton—Southwestern tip of Long Island at the Narrows leading to New York bay.
