At 4:15 a. rn., Sunday, fire of un- known origin swep t through an un- occupied bungalow on Church street , near Carroll avenue , owned by ' Wil- liam Carroll of New York. The fire already had a good start , when it Avas discovered by a pa,$sing milkman , who drove to ; Seibert' s bakery on Hawkin s avenue several blocks away. From th ere a fire alarm was telephoned. The Ronkonkoma volunteer firemen were unable to save the building. About 7:30 p; m. last Wednesday, fire broke out in the rear part of the Frank McCormick home on Brown ' s road , near the north end of Lake Ron- konkoma. Accordin g to fire depart- ment officials , the fire was caused by the accidental exp loding of a lamp in the kitchen. Ronkonkoma firemen , under the di- recti on of -Chief Clarence Duflielcl , fought the fire , which sent off larg-o clouds of dense smoke , and succeeded in limiting the blaze to the rear of the two-story dwelling. According to Islip Town police , the . elderly man attempted - to stab himself iin the chest with a carving knife , but the knife apparently was found to be too dull , so he slashed his wrists with a razor , police say. A. .Meeting The Medford Parent-Teacher as- sociation on Thursday evening heard an interesting talk by Miss Marth a Sansom , public health nurse in charge of the Second Supervisory district schools , under the supervision of Su- perintendent \Walter M. Ormsby, Miss Sansom spoke on posture and demon- strated , with moving p ictures , exer- cises and posture of children taken on local and sura'ounding school grounds while at plaiy. Miss Sansom , spoke of the work being accomplished by the Health departm ent in Suffolk and its co-operiataon wi th her in taking these pictures. Miss Vera Jacques , local district health nur§e , spoke about the recent chest clinic. Dr . Elizabeth- Wel Is. of the Child Health department of Riv- erhead , who \was present for a . short time , explained the work being done in the county in the Physical Educa- tion program , and the benefits from the sale , of -tuberculosis seals which (Continued on page 2) Many Seek Places lit Trade Classes For Aviation Jobs Over 600 Applicants Already Si gned Free School to Start in Bay Shore February, With Prospect of Others Being ^Established Later The proposed .aviation trades train- ing classes scheduled to be started February 1 in Bay Shore , will not lack for students , judging from the registration figures throughout Suf- folk 'in the pa.st ten days. Up to Friday night , a ' total of 630 Suffolk men , seeking admittance to the classes ,, had registered in the State Unemployment Service offices (in the county, according to John Lloyd , manager of the state unit at 10 South Ocean avenu e , Patchogue. Most of the 630 registrants had filed applications in the Patchogue office , Mr. Lloyd said. The registration procedure consists of taking the name , address , educa- tion and mechanical experience of the registrant. Undler tentative plans , it is expected that , just before the classes are started in Bay ShOre r s Fourth Avenue school , notice will be sent to each of the State\ Unemploy- ment Service offices to furnish a cer- tain number of men for the sessions. When this notice has been re- ceived , a certain . numher of . reg is- tants sufficient, to fill these quotas will receive postcard notices to report to Bay Sh ore , . where they will be examined by representatives of the Republic Aircraft corp oration , ; the concern that will give employment to the men on completing the three- month s ' free course. Meanwhile , the Board of Supervis- ors ' committee , headed by Brookhaven Town Supervisor Edgar A. Sharp, which is in charge of the setting up training classes in the county, is speeding the work of getting the Bay Shore school in condition for the classes. F irst Aid; Ambu - lance Purchased , Housed in Portion Road Firehouse Ambulance service for Lake Ron- konkoma and vicinity wili be avail- able within a -week , under the aus- pices of the Medical Serviee unit of the Ronkonko-Jiia Volunteer Fire de- partment. . - . . A ; used ambulance , purchased uaider approval recently voted by the Ron- konkoma department , was delivered last Friday morning and has been on display in th« firehouse on Portion road since then. The Medical Service unit is ar- ranging to g_t insurance coverage and license plates by the end of this week. Dr. Walter F. Roettinger , who was one of the prime movers in the ambulance plan , is giving a first aid course to the volunteers who will comprise the ambulance crew . The crew will inelude Walter Gei- gerich , Georg . Fehring, Charles Sei - bert , Francis Hugelrneyer , Henry Lange , Jr., Kenneth Duffield and Francis Pfeiffer.
