A. Appleton , \ general manager , the ser- vice , according- to present plans , to be re-established in . mid-November. \In anticipation of heavy troop movements to the military reserva- tion after induction into the army of those men picked by selective ser- vice , \ Mr. Appleton said , \the Long Island railroad is making plans to operate directly into Camp Upton over the mile-and-a-half spur now being rebuilt over the old ri g ht-of- way connecting with our main line at a point approximately two miles east of the , present . Yap hank station. \This spur will -not only be nsed for the movement of troops int o and out .from the camp , ' brit it will , throug h special sidings , provide in addition direct' access to the large warehouses now being- constructed there , '\by the army; ' for the storage of food and other . supplies. \D uring . , . the period from June , 1917 ,, when Camp Upton ' - , was first conceived , until October , 1919 , wheri it was , closed ,, the Long - Island , rail- road carried there arid to Caiiip Mill' s (now /• Mitchel . Field) , a total of 4 , - 385j'26;4 passengers , including troops moved on \government order , troops oil \furlough , and friends - and rela- tives visiting : trobps - at camp. - . \Furthermore , we handled 1 , 136 , - 146 . \ .tons of freight—38,000 car loads ~t \6 and froin . the . canips. . \6 ur heaviest' in.op.th was Ju ly, 1918,, when we . carried, 308 , 642 men oh 47*5 special , trains. - Our heaviest single . clay was.. July. 13 , 1918 , when 32 , 015 men -were moved on 48 special trains requiri:?ii 61! cars. . ' • ;•!¦ i ¦ ¦*¦ . ' ¦ 'VT 7 , - . • .: - ¦ . \At the present time we are pre- pared to handle much greater move- ments of troops ' and their supplies if necessa^' -v Our- present equipment is superior in size/ and speed to the tars ' and locomotives \ of* - 1917-1919 , and we- have gained in experience during the subsequent years. \Whereas in 1918 it was consid- ered a remarkable feat of railroad engineering . that we were able to carrv successfully, and without inter- ruption to our regular passenger ser- vice 32 , 015 men on 48 special trains iii one 24-hot ... period , during the curren t New York World' s fair we have averaged in both 1939 and 1940 a far larger number of daily passen- gers to the exposition and a far l arger number of daily special trains —our record to date being Septem- ber 3 ,. .1939 , when we handled 228 , 181 visitors into and out from the W orld' s fair, station and operated as many as 27 Long Island railroad trains in one direction in one hour. \ O BITUARY JOHN E. WALKER John E. Walker , aged 78 , who re- tired some time ago after having operated a farm in Medford for many years , 1 'died Suddenly oh Saturday at Slriebler ' s Boarding home , 284 South Ocean avenue , Patchogue , \whore he had , been residing. ' He was born in Medford' and had lived in this section of the ' county all his life. Mr, Walker at one time was school tax collector , truant officer anil sole trustee of Medford school. Mr. Walker , a. widower , leaves a daughter , Mrs. Susan A. Cherney of Patchogue , and a sister , Mrs. Susan Hopper of South Norwalk , Conn. The funeral service, was held at 2 p. ; m, Tuesday at the E. M. Sharp Funeral home , Railroad avenue , Pat- chogue , the Rev. Waldo E. Putnam, pastor of the First Baptist church , of- fi ciating. Interment was in Middle Island cemetery, Middle Island. A. G. Rasquin Dies Suddenly, ! i^ged 55 ¦Almon G. Rasquin , aged 55 , United States Internal Revenue Collector for the First District of New York , who had been prominent in ' Suffolk pol- ities for many years , died suddenly of a heart disease attack at 3:30 a. m. Tuesday in the Hotel Henry Perkins , Riverhead , where he made his home with his family durin g the winter months. Mr. Rasquin suffered pain during the night and telephoned Dr. Halloeh Luce of Riverhead , but \by the time I>r. Luce arrived at the hotel a short time later, Mr. Rasqu in was dead. . Mr. Rasquin was appointed Inter- nal Revenue collector by. President Roosev elt in 1934 , at which time, he resigned as Democratic leader of Suf- folk county. Before his appointment in 1934 , he had served as transfer tax attorney for Nassau and Suffolk coun- ties for several ' years.
