Board of Elections at Riverh ead. While men were waiting in lin e at most of the 195 polling places in the • county when they were opened foi* • business at 7 a. m., the registering- - throughout the ensuing 14 hours was comparativel y slow , but steady. Of the 23 , 042 total , a scattered few of which were residents outside of Suffolk , Brookhaven town accounted for 3 , 665. Patchogu e and vicinity ac- counted for nearly a thousand of the Brookhaven town total. Increased vehicular traffic in the center of Suffolk , due to the revival of Gamp Upton .on a large scale , should bring an end to the delay in the proposed improvement of Long Island avenue by the State Highway department , say s Supervisor £dg£tf* A. In his statement advocating im- mediate action on the improvement of the direct - east-west thoroughfare , eastward from Farmingdale for a distance of about 30 miles , Mr. Sh arp recounted the tri al s and tribul ations that have constantly confronted pro- ponents of the p lan since it was first advanced more than ten years ago. ($c^ ¦ > Gannett to Speak At Willkie Rally On Octokr 3© One of the most important political meetings in recent years , a town-wide Republican rally, will be held in the . Patchogue High school auditoriu m Wednesday evening of next week , Oc- tober 30 , at which time two nationally known speakers will be on han d among others to discuss the issues of the current Presidential campaign. Frank E. Gannett , newspaper pub- lisher and a candidate for the Repub- lican presidential nomination , will he one of the speak er s and the oth er prominent figure to appear at the rally will be United States Senator Ernest W. Gibson , Jr. The commit- tee is also hopeful of having- Brace Barton , Republican nominee for the S enate , at the meeting but confirm- ation of the engagement has not yet been received. Other speakers will be Congressman Leonard W. Hall , Senator George L. Thompson , Assemblyman Edmund R. Lupton , Sheriff Jacob S. Drcyer , Dis- trict Attorney Fred J. Munder ,. Ellis T. Terry, nominee for County treas- urer , and Richard T. Gilmartin , nom- inee for welfare commissioner. The committee on arrangements , which is hOaded by Street Commis- sioner Robert S. Given County Office Mrs. Doris Ellis , president of the auxiliary of Henry James Jones post , Veteran ' s of Foreign Wars , of Med- ford was . chosen as- Suffolk ^ county council junior vi_e-preside*nt : at the October meeting of , the .Suffolk Coim- ty council held at Islip recently. Those from the Medford auxiliary who at- tended were Mrs. Ellis , Mrs. B. Wes- sel , Mrs. P. Connell , Mrs. F. Corley, Miss Hester Corley, Mrs. Ann Gal- ium , Mrs. R. Ward and Mrs. M. Wein- rich. The council is planning to en- tertain abou t 100 of the enlisted men at Camp Upton , on next Wednesday evening at the Medford Veterans hall. The committee on arrangements in- cludes Mrs. Cullum , Mrs. Ellis , Mrs. Connell of the local auxiliary ; Mcs. Margaret Preston and Mrs. Till is Thompson of Babylon and Mrs. Char- lotte Shepard of Setauket. Further Housing For Camp Upton Goes on Contract Expect Completion of Tem- porary Work Nov. 15 Future Status of Workers Unde - termined—Small Recession Now , No General Layoff Taking Place. The temporary housing that has been under construction at Camp Up- ton , Yaphank , for the past several weeks , must be finished by November 15 , and following the completion of this project , \work will be started on the erection of permanent canton- ments , it is learned. The permanent construction , accord- ing to reports , will be done under pri- vate contract , instead of by the pres- ent method of complete supervision of the w ork by Army officials. . Whether or not the private con- tractor who is g iven the Yaphank job will demand outside union labor in preference to the nearly 500 Suffolk mechanics now emp loyed in the camp is not yet known. Of those how em- ployed there ,. about 3 . 50 are from Brookhaven town , including- abou t 100 former W. P. A. men , whose families have been taken off the relief rolls in view of the camp employment. A small number of men were tem- porarily laid off last Wednesday, but it was learned from unofficial but accurate sources that this was more or less due to some part s of the con- struction work getting ahead oi the others. This layoff gave rise to re- ports of wholesal e discharging of the men , but it is reported that no such step is contemplated. A. L Post and Boosters V Give National Flag To Each L E. Church Last Sunday the William Merritt Hallbck post, American Legion , and the Boosters ' club of the post jointly presented a beautiful silk American flag to each of the three churches in Lake Ronkonkoma. The flags , each having a gold fringe , are equipped with staff , on which is mounted the American Eag le; and a stand for each. . Post Commander Sidney E.
