Takes Initial Game of Title Series in One* sided Manner Largest Crowd of Season Sees Hi ghway Team Batter West Patchogue in Terrible Style Disregarding all zoning laws , the Brookhaven Town Highway nine set up a slaug hterhouse in West Pat- chogue , and had the West Patchogue A. C. as the initial victim Sunday. • As part of the groundbreaking ceremonies for the new establishment on tbe site of the Waverly avenue ball diamond , the Hig hway squad buried Joe Rukowski , West Patch- ogue ace , in the excavation , -crammed Relief Hurler Charlie Barnisfh , a sub- dued ' southpaw , into the cornerstone , then used Sammy Bunn ' s hoofk-to- lead the West Pats in g-eneral to slaughter to the painful extent of 19—5. In brief , Highway won the first game of the littl e \World' s Series \ for the South Shore league ' s 1940 title before one of the largest crowds of the season; Highway hardly waited for Unips Jack Warhop- to shout \Batter up \ before going into action. One fan said Highway found some fireworks that F6lix Grucci left on the field after last week' s pyrotechnic dis- play. Anyway, when the Hi ghway explosions were over at the end of the third , the score stood at 1 3—4 . Hi ghway knocked Rukowski off the mound ' in the third , with seven runs already in , and when Charlie Barnish came oft* the mound at the end of the third , six more run s were across the pan , which merely goes to prove that Highway was not show- ing partiality. Frank Andrisani , regular Highway sparkplug, had the spark tafken out of him- by four successive bases on balls , a fielder ' s choice and an infield out , but scored four times. Bill Rooney was Highway ' s batting - heroj getting a singl e , - a double and two triple s out of six trips to the plate. Rooney ; batted in seven runs , scored twice himself and was run down once trying to convert a tri ple into a home-run. \Buck\ Albin was behind hte plate for West Patchogue , substituting i' or Joe Cardamone , who was on tho sidelines with a dislocated finger.
