Hit-run Car Driver Caught After Search Admits It: Fined $25 Arrested by Patchogue Village po- lice after a long search early Thurs- day mornin g on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident sev eral hours earlier , Richard C. Murphy, Jr., aged 29 , of Heywood road , Brentwood , pl eaded guilty b efore Acting Police Justice Lincoln G. Schmidt in Village court -an d was fined $25 . -He was also sentenced to 30 day s in the -county jail , but execution .of this was -\sus- pended.. ' . Shortly after midnigh t Wednesday, Rowland Turbush of Union avenue , Riverhead , reported to Patchogue po- lice headquarters that his coupe , parked outside the Patchogue grill on East Main street , had been struck and damaged by a passing car , whose operator drove away \ after , the-crash. Turbush furnished police with the license number of the car , and after the ' owner of the car bearing such a number was determined -by Patchogue police^ -Patrolman Roland Baker , who had g ne off duty a short time earlier , drove to Sayville . where he , sought the assistance of. Islip . Town . Officer George Kleever. ; . \' .. . The -two officers after a search , found, Murphy \ ,at his father ' s home in Lake Ronkonkoma. He Was re- turned to Patchogue by Officer -Baker and was arraigned before Justice Schmidt at 6 a. m. Patrolman Not* ' - . ris Gilm ' an and William Wiedmer took part in the investigation of the case. WILL OPEN ST. GEORGE MANOR FRIDA Y AFTERNOON For the first time in its histo ry, the Manor St. George , M oriches , will be opened to the public Friday aft- ernoon by Miss Eugenie Smith under the auspices of the Patchogue Gar- den club. The manor is a place cf beauty and historic importance and its initial public opening is expected to attract a large attendance. Osborn Shaw of Heliport , ^Brookhaven town historian , will giv e a talk on the history of the manor- and the ancient Smith domain at 4:30 p. m. as a feature of the public showing. According to . the-testinidny of Leo . rir , ard Brame-of- M oriches , who claimed he was .. at . a gas-station just east - .of the accident .. and -.witnessed it ,, the two ' women were . about- in the center a of the street, 1 -when ' < Miss Lowej ap- parently confused by the oncoming westbound car, pulled Mrs. Hickey and this brought them into the path of the vehicle , so that Mr. Carlson could not avoid them. Mr. Carlson testified that the two wome- W had stepped out from in back of another car.,Jn front of him and he tried to avoi d them by turning to the left. He said that after hittin g the two; , he did not know th at Mrs. Hickey had remained caught by the front bumper of the car. Paul Warner of -East Moriches , who testified that he was driving eastward at - the time , said he saw the object on. the bumper of the Carlson car , then noticed it was a woman. Mrs. Lowe . testified to the effect that she heard a thud while in the car and turned to see what had h app ened. Tlie accident was investigated* by Brookhaven Town Police Chief Ed- ward N.
