Ladders of Aluminum Give Firemen Speed Lawrence Holzap fel of Cedar ave- nue , Ronkorikoma , looked with some degree of pride on the results of the Motor Hook & Ladder No. 2 contest of tli e Suffolk county firemen ' s tour- nament held in Patchogue last Wed- nesday. Mr. Holzopfel , former Ronkorikoma garageman and at present employed as a mechanic by the Grumman air- craft firm in Bethpage , recently com- pleted a new type of ladder , construct- ed entirely of aluminum. The fire departments of Bay Shore , East Hampton and West Sayville each placed aii order fox* one of the ligh tweight ladders , which are 25 feet long. In the tournament hook and ladder competition , these three teams , using -the Holzapfel-made lad- ders , finished in one-two-three order. And to add to the Holzapf el pride , all three teams broke the former state record .for the contest of 21.8 seconds. Bay Shore finished in 19.8 seconds , East Hampton in 20.4 and West Sayville in 20.8. Bay Shore E. The occasion was \ the 1940 parade and tournament-of the'tSuffolic Coun- ty Volunteer Firem en ' s -association; wh i ch . la-Sted ll hours , and wh en the program was concluded about 9 p. m., the . East Hampton 7Fire depart- ment had \ won the 19 - 10 point tro- phy with a total of .29 points; five state records had been \ broken ,, -three of them by the Bay Shore firemen , who imis-ied second with -28 points , and ^ the Pa ' tcliogue firensfen wfere being praised for . having ' sponso red one of the mlo , sty outstanding county tournament in years . The tournament , which was greatly favored by ' cloudy . but clear weat he r, was outstanding . in seyeral respects . First- - not one protest was. nlied by any of 'th e 227: departments , that com- peted , in . the '17; . events;• - seccntd not one accident occurred during the co urse \ of \these eff iciency ' • * ebftipoti- tions , and third , it drbw an excep- tionally large crowd vthat remained on the tournament grounds until the last drop of water waS2 dumped from the last bucket in the bucket bri- gade contest , the final event on the tourney program. Bayport finished third in the point competition , with a ;-total of 19 points , winning two first places and three second places. In the order of finish , other departments receiv- ing points -were Sayville , 14; Islip , 12; West Sayville , ten ; Riverhead and Smithtown , seven each ; East Northport , five ; St. James , two ; Brentwood , one. After tying, with West Say- ville at 1 . 1.4 seconds for first place , Sayville , in the run-off , did it in 10.2 , or four-fifths of a second better than the old . state, mark.
