Islanders Fig ht -City Move to Get More Water Wells Macy and Sprague Lead in Commission Hearing More Than 60 Nassau-Suffolk Repre- sentatives Oppose Application for 50 , 000, 000 Gallons Daily New Supply Tbe formal applicati on of New Y ork city, through Associate Assistant Corporation Counsel John Suglia for permission to tap Nassau county soil with new wells and tak e up to 50 , 000- 000 gallons more of water daily through 1945 drew hot oppositi on from more than GO representatives of Suffolk and Nassau at the State \Water Power and Control commission bearing in the State office building, New York , last Tuesday, The li ght was led hy J. Russel Sprague, Nassau county executive , and \V. Kingsland Macy, Republican county chairman of Suffolk. Mr. Sprague declared tho city is now taking more water out of Nassau county than the county itself , and that further drafts would con- stitute a gross encroachment on Nas- sau ' s ri ghts , as the county cannot safely spare additional water. He said the city had delayed the Dela- ware project and that this is the cause , if th ere is the emergency which the city officials plead. -The argument for the application ¦contained the statement that the Del- aware-Rondout watershed supply will come into use in 1945 , and the appli- cation for more water from Nassau is for an \ emergen cy period\ until that date. Thirty wells would be sunk on city-owned property between Lynbrook and Massapequa , it was explained. Mr. Macy insisted that the city had no right to come on Long Island for more water , calling this a dan - gerou s experiment with the island source s already so heavily drawn , and argued that Long Island should have protection from the commission. It was decided to form a Nassau- Suffolfc steering committee to main- tain the opposition and to seek enough further hearings to get a full airing of the subject . The next hear- ing will be held July 11 at 10 a. m. in the Nassau County courthouse at Mineola. Am erican women average from three to five pounds lighter in weight than they did ten years ago.
