8 JUNE 5 - 11,2019 • MANHASSET PRESS MANHASSETPRESS.COM ON THE COVER Boys LAX Rolls Into States BY JOE SCOTCHIE manhasset@antonmediagroup.com T he Manhasset High School boys ’ lacrosse team continued making short work of their Long Island opponents last weekend as they defeated Harborfields, 16-3, to win the Long Island Class B championship after coming back to beat Garden City in the Nassau County championship, 6-5, in double overtime. Playing like the Vince Lombardi- coached Green Bay Packers of the 1960s, the Indians ran away with the game from the start, outscoring Harborfields, 5-0, in the first frame to grab a lead they never relinquished. Manhasset didn't let up, as no less than 12 players made it into the scorers ’ col umn. Michael Farrell had three goals to set the onslaught. Alex Racanelli had five saves and Steven Vlahakis added two, as Manhasset played near-perfect lacrosse on both ends of the field. The Indians advanced to the title game by winning the Nassau County Class B championship, defeating Garden City in a 6-5 overtime thrill er, with Joseph Terenzi scoring a game-winning goal with two minutes left in the overtime period. It set off a raucous on-field celebration, sending Manhasset to the Long Island title game. Team sports always means defense and the title game was no different. Racanelli was stellar in the goal, notch ing 10 saves, including a game-saving catch that enabled the contest to go into overtime. The win avenged three painful county final defeats Manhasset suffered at the hands of Garden City squads. In doing so, Manhasset came from behind for the home win. Trailing 5-2 after one period of play, Manhasset stormed back with three goals in the third frame. Terenzi had three points, including two goals and an assist. Peter Lapins and Aidan Mulholland had two points each. Racanelli had 10 saves.
