Great Writers in Great Cities Miss Lonely Hearts and Day of the Locust On Thursday, Nov. 21, join Dr. Vivian Valvano Lynch as she discuss es two novellas by Nathanael West that are set during the Depression. Miss Lonelyhearts is actually an unhappy man writing a New York City newspaper advice column. Tod Hacken, in the second novella, goes to Hollywood to become a painter for movie backdrops, and dreams turn into nightmares. Lynch, who holds a PhD from Stony Brook University, is a professor emerita at St. John ’ s University. She authored Portraits of Artists: Warriors in the Novels of William Kennedy and numerous critical essays, book reviews, and conference presenta tions on lames Joyce, Irish literature, and Irish-American literature.
