Suoacnptton Rate: 32.00 Per Year In Advance THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER Ti. 1936 ^ ■ GEORGE U. HARVEY AGAIN A plea that cannot be ignored by Republican leaders Is the one made in behalf of Georije JU. Harvey, the Borough I ’ re.sident of Queens, by tho.se who are backing him for the Republican gubernatorial nomination. It can ’ t be ignored because it is.a fact that Harvey is con spicuous a.s one Republican officeholder with powerful Democratic sui)porl. And this year votes will be indis pensable if we are to elect a Republican to succeed ------ (rmwftoF i.< d maiu ______ _______ ; _________ Governor Larubrn's 'chan.ces of election without the help of New YiM-k ’ s very large electoral vote admittedly are not good. Without the strength that a strong vote getting candidate for Governor would give to the Re publican .ticket, (iovernor Landon may lose, this'State, in the mean time Democratic .strength in New York has ghown greater than ever. The city Democratic enroll ment is 1,.546,. ‘ 522. The Republican have 290,624^-~ Up state there are 1,402,062 Republicans and 853,578 Demo crats. Thus, the Democrats actually have 707,217 more enrolled voter.s*in the whole State than the RepuVilicans. (ieprge IJ. Ilarvjey-for-Governor adherents have been quick k) .seize uiion perfectly logical arguments sugge.s^d by the.se statistics. In every I ’ re.sidental year, they argue, the Upstate vote goes .strong for the Republican nominee for I ’ rcsuierit ami Governor. That much they believe can be depended on this year. -But —what about New York (bty? That is the question mark. Where can the Republicans select a candidate who will cut heavily into the normally Democratic vote of New York' City? “ In Queens! ’ ’ chorus the Harveyites. Their argument has been pi'tsented here before. Harvey has been elected Borough President of Queens three. time.s., .\Vinning by -^,437' in 1928, he won by 27-632 in 1929 and 52,032 in 1933. This was his record in a New York City borough with a Democratic enrollment -of 295,186 and'a Republican enrollment of 91,859. ' Harvey supporters argue that with the Harvey vote in Queens a Republican candidate for Governor could he elected as well as assuring Governor Landon ’ s election.' They contend also that his Democratic appeal i.s\ wider than the Borough of Queens where, incidentally, he has made a very efficient admini.strator. We cannot presume to dictate to Republican State leaders their choice for Governor. We have no doubt that they are 'giving the problem the clo.sest study. It should not have to be pointed odt that this man ’ s party loyalty or that man ’ s fine-record are not ne.die.s- sarily indices ,Qf their politicW strength. This year, as usual, votes will count and this year we are con vinced the right candidate will have an excellent chance to win. •9 Organization Candidates Are Unopposed In Nassau'^^ TO HAT* (SALS The WomeniB AuxUtary of St. Pnil ’ s pburch will sponaor a rum- mace wle on October 8 at the church.
