Why do the memories of. an unforgettable past §tir our emotions? A little reflection answers our ques tions, and, if W'e are wise, we shall make this a memor able day and allow sentiment to have its way. We aVe the better when ^v.e.'occasionally listen to the heaid and recognize that feeling rules our world..Fo.ssibly we c.an honor those who suffered and died, blit certain it is that we can honor ourselves. ^ .This is a sacred day because it perpetuates brave deeds. Young men, for the most part, have fought the wars of our country. Life is unspeakably dear to a _Y0Uth in his early twenties. The world les at hs feet. He wants to live, to love, to achieve, to conouer. The burning enthusiasm within his nature craves for exines- sion. He dreams his dreams and has visions. He builds :>|liB castles in the air. He make.s his life ’ s plan.s. All of these plans had to be suspended when the ver tto hs nation ’ s .summons came. He was ready, ^ __ he answered the call with but one thought in mind: , “ My country needs me. Send me where you will, ” He '1 b willing to nrake the supreme .sacrifice, if need be, that the nation may live and that free institutions survive. Se is willing to give his all. Holy is this day because we stand in the presence of death. That is always a solemn and serious thing. We sound taps, and they seem to echo-on the fields of -Gettysburg and Shiloh. From Manila Bay and San Juan Hill, from Verdun and the Argonne Forest come the same stirring notes. The gold star mother on this day looks upon the ^^Teture of that boy who was in her home but a short time ago. He worked, he played, he ran her errands, he Bhowed her his love, he seemed to live for her. She will .aever forget him. He is now with her as a sacred ..Eaemory. The bands play, the flag passes by, the graves l ife'decorated, and all .suggest to her him who meant so l^uch to her. The emptiness in her life .seems unbear- •^i>le, but she offers a prayer of gratitude to God that Gljlje could make her contribution to country, to liberty, I to justice. Sacred is Memorial Day becau.se' the institutions Lwhich our veterans preserved are sacred. They are the ^Bommon possession of the nation, a part of our civiliza- won by the struggles of the pa.st. Anything that is [>rth dying for is sacred, but so is it a challenge to living, to keep t fair and unblemished apd hand it m to those who come after, even safer, more secure, jre«rsacred. May this Memorial Day find us ready for our daily tasks of love and service, with the same readiness, zest, and devotion as prompted the brave soldiers and sailers of .the past to rally round the colors and give their hal^on the best they had n time of peril. If we, the living, Mihail do that, then we shall ke^p faith with the pa.st, UWitb those to whom, we are forever indebted. ---------------------------- - ---------------- Damages Rarn, Gafa^ In Great Neck ilEstimated At $10,- The Alerts Are Praised ^ from an jmdetermined origin Idan^e'esUmated at $1(1.000 tetay afternoon to a large and garage on Crampton ^jOraat Meek vUlage.
