In reality the region has slight re-- aemblanm to Ita imagined aspect Its vegetadM fa mostly hiddra in pockets, but when toand consists of pines, eedsrs^ Jnnipera, and sagebrush; its wrater is hidden deep in tanka or holes at the bottom of large “ blow-outa ” and Is found only by following <dd'Indian or mountain aheep trails or by watch ing the flight of: birds as they drop into these places to quench their thirst The animal life consista^rin- c^ially of migrant birds, ro<^ nflpits, woodchucks, black and grizsly bears; its scenery ta impressive in its grandeor. A glance at a map of Idaho shows ttiat the sootfaem pan of the state, lying between Aico and Carey and north of Minidoka, IS a vast region labeled desert or ndllng piateau. This region la about 100 miles southwest of Tellowstone park. Although almost totally unknown at present this sectlcn is destined some day to attract tourisu fiom all Amer ica, for its lava flows are as Interest ing as those of Veapviai, Manna Loa or Kilaoea. Part of it 'haa recently been .made into the craters of the Moon National monatnent The district consists of some 63 vol canic craters, lava, and cinder cones, all St present extinct or dormant The largest and most conspicuous Is 000 feet high, rising In the midst of a b^t of craters two or three miles wide and SO EiUes long The craters or cones are close together in the north and west; in the south thCy are miles apart. Among the Craters. In entering frtmi Minidoka one of the first majot' landmarks encountered is Big Dome...X-Xew^^nndred yards north of it is a crater ileverai hundred yards in diameter and'< about 200 feet deep. Bait a mile east of Big Dome Is an Imroenae crater ring that looks as If the t<^ of a momitaln had collapsed and fallen back into, tbe vbiouiic throat From the center, crags ot brigbt-red lava and burned cinders jut up. In some places the lava ia black, -as if suKdied te a fire. The crags have magnetic properties, and the compass aeedle cannot he de pended upon when oeer them. Their color is a grayhl) brown. West of the crater beside bubble Basin are channels winding through the lava flat Just as meandering brooks might cross a ievd meadow.
